About Diana Laurillard

Currently leading externally-funded research projects on learning design, online learning, and developing software interventions for learners with low numeracy and dyscalculia; running a CPD MOOC on 'ICT in Primary Education' on Coursera; developing a CPD MOOC on'Blended Learning Essentials for Vocational Education and Training' on FutureLearn.Prior to working at the UCL Institute of Education, I was Head of the e-Learning Strategy Unit at the Department for Education and Skills, and Pro-Vice-Chancellor for learning technologies and teaching at The Open University. Currently (2014-15) President of the Association for Learning Technology, and a Trustee of the Learning Foundation; Member of the FE Learning Technology Action Group reporting to BIS, and the Educational Technology Action Group reporting to DfE.Formerly on the Boards of the UNESCO Institute for IT in Education, the Fern Universitet in Germany, the Observatory for Borderless HE, and a founding member of the Visiting Committee on IT at Harvard University, and of the Centre for Educational Neuroscience (University of London).Specialties: Developing an interactive online digital design tool (the Learning Designer) for teachers and lecturers to adopt, adapt and share their teaching designs, especially with respect to effective innovation with learning technologies. The open access online tool attracts hundreds of international visitors every day, and now needs funding for further development. We are collaborating with teachers in HE, FE and Schools to develop it to be as flexible as possible across all sectors of education and training.Taking research prototypes on learning basic number concepts to development as smart-phone apps, to assist low numeracy for children and adults.'Teaching as a Design Science' - I think that's how we should conceptualise teaching. So that's the title of my recent book (Routledge, 2012).

  • The Open University
Lecturer, Senior Lecturer And Professor Of Educational Technology
    The Open University 1981 - 1995
    Milton Keynes, United Kingdom
Began with a role in 'audio-visual media', but was lucky that 'interactive video' came along to unite this with my previous work on CAL. So from them on was able to focus on bringing digital technologies into teaching and learning, at every opportunity:Founder and Head of Centre for Information Technology in Education (CITE), IET: to direct support to University for R&D in use of IT for teaching and learning, and preparation of the annual report and five year plan.Chair of BBC/OU Strategy Group on Research.Founder and Head of Programme in Learner Use of Media, to direct research and development on the balance and effectiveness of media use within courses. As Chair of ‘Computers in Learning’ (1990-94), designed the first non-science course to require use of computers.
  • The University Of Surrey
Research Officer And Lecturer In Computer Assisted Learning
    The University Of Surrey 1974 - 1981
    Guildford, Surrey
Responsible for development and evaluation of interactive graphical simulations and tutorials in science subjects, writing up research reports and papers. This was part of the National Development Programme in Computer Assisted Learning.Extended from HE to working with schools, especially a local special school for excluded learners, to introduce them to aspects of computing.Realised that the value of new technology had to be done on a much wider scale, so set my sights on the Open University as the best place to do this.
  • Polytechnic Of The South Bank
Research Assistant Then Lecturer In Mathematics
Polytechnic Of The South Bank 1969 - 1974
    London, United Kingdom
Taught maths to students studying maths, physics, engineering and biology. Quickly discovered that even with A-Level maths, they did not understand the mathematics they were using, so invented and developed new ways of teaching large classes (e.g. using the Keller Plan method) to allow the individual teaching needed. Used Open University TV programme computer simulations of mathematical concepts, which is why I then turned to 'Computer Assisted Learning' as the best hope for improving teaching and learning.
