About Diana Mines Nielander
Although community service was a strong interest of mine growing up, no guidance counselor ever mentioned that I might graduate from college and work in anything other than the corporate ranks. I didn’t even know there was an avenue in which people earned money and helped make the world a better place. And I certainly never imagined that my first college practicum would set my career in motion within what I now know as the nonprofit sector. Over the course of nearly two decades, I had the privilege of channeling my energy and passion into enhancing the lives of children with disabilities. While working in fundraising, marketing, PR, business development and nonprofit management I realized that fundraising will always be an essential source of revenue for nonprofit organizations, but that opportunities and revenue streams also exist through collaboration with the private sector. In early 1994 I had yet to hear of the term 'social entrepreneurship'; however I had what I thought was a novel idea: To approach corporations with the opportunity to 'buy' our expertise to enhance their businesses, all while sustaining ours. The idea of generating non philanthropic revenue became an innovative method of raising funds that would change the way we operated for the long haul.Through a variety of successful consulting partnerships with Toys R Us, Mattel, Fisher Price, V-Tech and trade associations, Lekotek, the nonprofit I worked for, began to diversify its revenue and establish itself as a pioneer in social entrepreneurship. In 2005, we launched www.ableplay.org and increased our revenue base while staying true to our core values and mission. Through this work, I engaged with small businesses which sparked my interest in helping both nonprofits and small business create sustainable futures. In 2008, I established High-Impact Consulting to have the best of both worlds and apply my strategic business experience and marketing expertise as a consultant and coach.
