Attending lectures and workshops at the University of Chester. 16-week placement at Whitby High School. Teaching KS3 pupils science, specialising in Physics. All lessons planned in detail and reflected on after delivery. Observing KS3, KS4 and KS5 science lessons. Shadowing form tutor’s sessions with Y11 class.Although I finished my first placement, I decided to withdraw from the course: after much deliberation, I decided teaching in a classroom situation was not for me.

I showed school parties and public visitors around the centre, explaining the science behind the exhibits and assisting visitors as necessary. I also delivered and developed science shows and workshops, for both public and school audiences, targeting all Key Stage science curriculum areas (Techniquest’s activities aimed to enrich and extend the National Curriculum). I presented shows both in the centre and as outreach activities in schools. Topics included Light, Electricity, Forces (all primary levels), Astronomy (all levels), Cells (KS3 and KS4), DNA (KS4 and KS5) and Atomic and Nuclear Physics (KS4). I collaborated with colleagues from Thinktank in Birmingham, and Birmingham University, to develop a completely new outreach show ‘Inside the Atom’. I also wrote and delivered a show at the Wrexham Science Festival in 2007, 'A Brief History of the Universe', which was extremely well attended and received. In conjunction with Glyndwr University, I was involved in running taster days targeting Y10 pupils who would possibly not have considered attending university. In 2008 I won the BIG (British Interactive Group) prize for the best short demonstration at their annual event. I recorded several live demonstrations for 3 series of BBC Radio Wales’ ‘Science Café’ program. I left to prepare for a PGCE course in Secondary Science at Chester University.

I helped in various classes, from reception to Y5, as my children moved up through the school. I helped with literacy and maths, listened to pupils read and assisted with science and DT projects. I stopped volunteering when I took up paid employment.

One of two people setting up the infrastructure to run LearnDirect online courses from cummunity cybercentres and libraries. I marketed LearnDirect courses, visited potential sites to present information on the courses, recruited and assisted online tutors and recruited members of the public onto LearnDirect courses. My role came to an end when funding for the project was prematurely cut.

Techniquest is a hands-on Science Discovery Centre based at NEWI (now Glyndwr University) in Wrexham. I joined very soon after Techniquest had opened. I underwent presentation training and helped in setting up the centre and its procedures. I guided school parties round the exhibits and presented science shows.

I assisted in the Y5 class as directed by the teacher, helping the pupils with reading, maths and various projects.

I developed and maintained software for analysing oil-well logs, specialising in the user interface. I left to have my first child.

One of 3 partners in pragma Consultants, working with companies in the Chemical Engineering and similar industries. I carried out marketing projects and in particular conducted a market research survey for a major British company which was considering diversifying. I gathered the data, wrote the report and presented it to the client. I left because commuting from Enfield to Macclesfield on a weekly basis proved too arduous.

Technica provided risk analysis services to the oil and chemical industries. Their software division developed, maintained and installed a suite of risk analysis software both in-house and at clients' sites. As Head of Sales and Marketing I was responsible for marketing all software products and sales of self-contained risk analysis programs.

I managed the technical support department, which logged clients' problems and managed their solutions, using resources from the software development team.

I was one of a team developing and maintaining a suite of risk analysis software. I had a major role in launching a new product at a conference in Oslo. I visited clients' sites in Norway, Holland and Britain to install software on their computer systems.

EASAMS was part of the GEC/Marconi Group. I was one of a team developing software for presenting and logging data during Naval sea trials. I also maintained and installed software on clients' sites. I left to move out of defense-related work.
