Athabasca Land Use Manager/Liaison OfficerAthabasca Land Use Office Jan 2001 - Feb 2013Prince Albert, SkDeveloped a regional draft Athabasca Land Use Plan in partnership with the Provincial Government of Saskatchewan. The purpose of this initiative is to provide regional land use planning and management tools on behalf of the Athabasca communities in partnership with the Province. The goal is to promote social, cultural, economic development in the Athabasca, ensure regional consultation is effective when new development(s) occur or ongoing development requires licensing as required by the regulators.Incorporation and development of Aboriginal and Traditional Knowledge Methodologies was the key in developing the land use plan, Athabasca residents needed a say on what and where things can happen in their "back yard". To complement this process, we developed a regional consultation protocol, as it relates to the "Duty to Consult". This helps us to continue our efforts to work with Industry and Governments to meet the Crown's obligation to the Duty to Consult and address any potential development impacts to our Treaty and Aboriginal Rights by proposed projects in the Athabasca Region.I've done a number of traditional knowledge research projects in the past to help promote our culture and traditions, protect our Treaty Rights and how we can engage meaningfully with industry and governments on potential projects in the Athabasca Region. The research helps us work closely with industry and governments to incorporate traditional knowledge with projects-Who we are? Where we live? What we depend on for sustenance? When things happen? How will we be involved in the planning? Key questions that need to be considered when conducting research as it relates to your culture and traditional values. Number of research projects I've done in the past includes; Athabasca Regional Traditional Land Use Study, Woodland Caribou Strategy TEK Study, Athabasca Sand Dunes TEK Study, Gunnar and Lorado Mine TEK Study, Habitat Study and other studies.
