I want to thank members of the Postsecondary and Career Education (PCE) Division, and most importantly the Team and Leadership at the DC Reengagement Center. I have had the honor of working with youth and their families by providing case management and barrier mitigation to assist our District youth in returning to school with the intent to earn a High School Diploma or GED. While building meaningful relationships with youth, I have also had the privilege to work on policy implementation to help decrease the number of youths who disengage from education. If you reside in the District of Columbia, you are definitely aware in the spike of youth violent crimes in 2022. A recent report shared that the District of Columbia has about 7,000+ opportunity youth who are not enrolled in a school or working. This is a serious problem and a lack of engagement is causing youth crimes to continue to climb. Programs like the ReEngagement Center provide youth who need a secondary opportunity the chance to get back on track. I encourage other local cities and states to start implementing ReEngagement Center Models as it has proven to work. Thank you to all my colleagues at OSSE for a great experience. -
