I am a new graduate with a psychology degree and a head full of ideas. I am also a refugee from Eritrea who has found a home on the traditional territories of the Indigenous peoples of Treaty 7. As a recent graduate, my intention is to use my research skills and education to be the bridge between diasporic Eritreans in Calgary and the educational system in Canada. I want to redeem and in many ways renew the social narrative around psychology in East African communities. In complete honesty, I do not know how I am to go about accomplishing this grandiose task. However, I believe that the same faith, audacity, and tenacity that have helped me complete my degree with distinction, will also help me accomplish this task. Notably, being educated in North America and growing up in Africa has granted me insight into the possible reasons for the dissonance between social institutions and East African immigrants in Calgary. I am currently seeking out research opportunities as well as assistantships in psychology with a focus on educational psychology.
