I have recently discovered my cartoon demonstration can generate interest in other topics by linking them in the same presentation. For example, combining a fun activity (cartooning) with my children's book about eating a rainbow diet of fruit and vegetables often creates a shift in attitude about eating vegetables. Feedback about the process from educators indicates kids (and adults) subconsciously link healthy eating with the fun of cartooning and adopt a more positive attitude about healthy food. One of the major goals of the book was to change kid's attitudes by empowering them to make positive choices in their diet...choices they control. Linking cartooning and the concept of eating a rainbow seems to help them view healthy food differently. I believe my presentation can create a more receptive audience for parents and educators attempting to change young people's diets. IIf we, as adults, can create an atmosphere in which kids buy into the concept that eating healthy food makes more sense and actually can be fun, the positive benefits will soon be obvious to kids not on board. Peer pressure, the strongest force among children, could change the trajectory of children's health for generations to come if we harness it for good.
