In the role of Enterprise Architect:Working across asset management technology in I was part of a group aiming to enhance the technology stack, architecture and process with the ultimate aim of creating a global foundation of data services, data warehouses and data marts to reduce costs and time-to-market and increase effectiveness and quality.The work spanned a broad range of technology-focused issues from ensuring alignment of the architecture with the business strategy, to eliciting and understanding the priority user stories, to building highly performant, resilient services, and designing and implementing automation to ensure quality and integrate it into the software engineering process.Some contributions included:• Formulation and articulation of the business case and technology strategy utilizing elements of TOGAF, RCDA, Scaled Agile Framework and Kaizen• Design of the organisation, core practices and processes• Implementation of ongoing design and governance processes again calling on the above frameworks and techniquesIn the role of Chief Business Technologist for Global Middle Office Technology:Created strategic focus for a team of globally distributed team of engineers, scrum masters and product owners, and managed delivery through this team.Some key achievements include:- enhanced resilience moving to stateless redundant architecture- enhanced scale and reliability by moving from polling to event-driven architecture- reduced risk and enhance recoverability by substantial redesign of the message flow and enrichment- reduced complexity and duplication by adopting event bus for 3rd party and custodian interaction- significantly improved quality by adoption of advanced devops and automated testing practices using 'disposable' environmentsBalanced complex and conflicting demands of the business and ensured progress in the technology, architecture and development practices being utilized to deliver software.

Global Co-lead for Sales, CRM and Management Reporting Technology in Goldman Sachs Asset ManagementKey achievements: Architecture and delivery of US Advisory Sales Management system to a 1800 globally distributed user group. Heavy focus on the performance of the web app for use in live sales situations involving user observation and tuning of the client app as well as tuning of the server cluster architecture and configuration. Led a team distributed between New York, Chicago, London and Bangalore Reviewed and redesigned technical strategy for mobile platform utilizing proofs of concept to assess software and hardware stacks available Devised, socialized and won support for a more holistic, over-arching sales and CRM technology solution based around globally shared services, role-based app design and an innovative UI container

This role started with work on a number of projects as part of their Edge Computing initiative which had the aim of enhancing end-user experience of web-properties globally by providing an automated edge network platform. This then integrated with Windows Azure to become Windows Azure Infrastructure. I then worked on the Windows-host-based load balancer and DNS tools.Key achievements: Programmable Content Delivery Network: designed and led delivery of a self-provisioning version of Microsoft's Content Delivery Network and later integration into Windows Azure. Download Manager: led the development and delivery of a CDN-aware download manager that integrates with and exploits Microsoft’s Content Delivery Network to ensure optimal file download speed globally. Worked closely with partner and customer teams to identify needs and solve architectural and integration issues. Designed the simple but elegant UI through several generations working with Windows UI specialist in Redmond and graphic designer in Dublin. Programmable Network: delivered the first version of an innovative new software load balancer based on IP-in-IP encapsulation into production. Worked closely with operations teams in Redmond to understand the core features of the load balancer and importantly the working practices and scenarios of operations personnel. Partnered closely with the test lead to explore, understand and test failure scenarios to deliver the manageability and level of resilience required. Self-provisioning DNS: designed both UI and back end components to enable DNS as a self-provisionable service in Windows Azure Distributed Billing: delivered a resilient, globally distributed billing system into production for Microsoft’s Dynamic Edge Computing platform.

As Global Middleware Technical Lead:Led the formulation of product approach, design and delivery of middleware products in the data services and message routing area used across the firm. Developed in a combination of C# and Java.Key achievements: Data Server: Designed and delivered a unified data service platform with the ability to support a broad range of requirements and message protocols, working closely with line of business teams across the firm. Data Server utilizes a lightweight component model built on top of the CXF web service stack to enable widely varying policies and behaviours and clustering architectures. XRDS: As program manager delivered enhancements to this ‘Enterprise Service Bus’ style XML message routing layer including least latency response processing and global traffic management policies. Cola: As lead of the London side of the team contributed to the design and development of a new configuration server aims to offer massively scalable endpoint management.As Global Cash Management Technical Lead:Led design and development management of a variety of systems and components used by the Treasury function of Morgan Stanley to forecast and manage cash for the firm. Developed in a combination of Java and C#Key achievements: Led the design and delivery of a real time updated data warehouse enabling complex queries over every state change of every cash movement for 2 years. This included an innovative end-user tool that enabled the business to design and schedule the creation and update of their own data cubes using Microsoft Analysis Services as the OLAP engine. Numerous enhancements to the core real time cash management systems. Created multiple preproduction environments functionally identical to production which enabled agile delivery of new features every 3 to 4 weeks. Major scale and performance enhancements to the core real time cash management systems to overcome scaling limits exposed by extreme trading conditions.

Intamission was a start up so my contribution was broad including product strategy and customer engagements. I worked with the CEO and CTO to develop a pitch to 3i to fund a new enterprise integration product based around a common model. I then solved the problem of complex deployment and management of software agents by developing a distributed management layer using a distributed architecture built using JMX nodes, orchestrated by a central model hosted in a JavaSpace.
