I create media products that people love. They tell stories that are useful or informative but also challenging, inspiring, entertaining or even funny. Most of all, I love leading editorial teams to pull those stories together into a cohesive whole issue, site, episode or programme with a compelling cover story or surprising theme – a product that the audience too can love.Engineering & Technology, the B2B magazine for members of the IET, covers everything from artificial intelligence to renewable energy, with exclusive in-depth features and hard-hitting investigations. I made E&T more human with reviews, quirky columns and even humorous fiction. I found journalists with unusual perspectives for variety and diversity, to add a little glamour and to lift the product to another level.My editorship was an ongoing revolution in the IET’s stakeholder communications. An amazing team delivering this excellent product made it the most valued membership benefit and beat more famous titles to editorial awards. I also dreamt up a new magazine for young teenagers, called Flipside, about movies, music, sport and more, to improve the image of STEM careers. I convinced the IET Board, ran the project and found the funding. I assembled a freelance team and had a research agency test our ideas in schools. Soon after launch, we took Flipside to the newsstand – no mean feat for a technical institution with a bunch of specialist magazines. Both magazines required serious leadership, strategic thinking and stakeholder management as well as editing. I defined the brands and then lived and breathed them to give the titles a clear remit and more distinctive voice, style and tone. I set the content strategies across all formats from print to podcast and tried new ones from interactives to AR. In events, I’ve co-presented awards with celebrities, hosted technical seminars and presented a technology fashion show in Shoreditch.I’ve been making complex technical subjects more accessible for my whole career. And you can tick off the skills you’d expect in an editor: detail, proofing, research, writing, interviewing, collaboration, flexible communications, data analysis, production, budgeting, planning, and organisation to multitask and meet every deadline. Yet I can offer much more, from building or developing a team, to running a digital transition, to bringing a zombie title back to life.
