SANDF Reserve Force Infantry Battalion
Ranger Hluhluwe Zone:This entailed acting as a liaison and extension officer between the Natal Parks Board and the game farmers in the Hluhluwe and Mkuze areas. The work was largely to act as a route for the farmers and people in the area to have access to conservation knowledge. I was involved in projects such as the set up of fish and crocodile farming ventures, giving advice on game stocking and problem animal control. Problem animal control involved setting and baiting traps for leopards and crocodiles. I was also responsible for the successful tracking down, darting, capture and re-release of a White Rhino, which had broken out of the Mkuze Game Reserve.A large part of my responsibility was to work with a game guard force in anti-poaching activities - night patrols, boat patrols on the St. Lucia Lake and work in the heavily populated rural areas surrounding the nature reserves. Enforcement of the Nature Conservation Act was a very important part of my job. An example of this is that I was responsible for gaining information on the illegal capture and keeping of reptiles. I was then responsible for the confiscation and re-release of these animals into a suitable habitat, as well as the prosecution of the offenders.Ranger St. Lucia:In January 1990 I was transferred to the St. Lucia Estuary. There I supervised a force of fifty labourers and was responsible for the upkeep and maintenance of the entire Natal Parks Board infrastructure of offices, camp sites, visitor areas and facilities. My workforce consisted of builders, plumbers, cleaners, labourers and painters.Visitor control, especially on the beaches, and law enforcement with regards to fish catches during peak times played a large role in my activities. I also held the post of fill-in tourism officer, which entailed being the guide for boat trips on the St. Lucia Estuary, and I was involved to a limited extent in walking trails on the Eastern Shores.
From July 1988 to May 1989 I was employed full time as a trails officer by this organisation. This involved taking groups of people on walking trails in the Okavango Delta, the Tuli Game Reserve in Botswana and the Klaserie Game Reserve in the Eastern Transvaal Lowveld. I acted as the armed guide for groups of up to eight people at a time in big game areas. The tours were of a five day duration during which time I would be responsible for the transport of the groups when by road, the general safety of the people when on foot and in close proximity to lion, elephant, buffalo etc, the guiding of the group, the imparting of bush skills and knowledge as well as the cooking for the group.
I held a part-time post as a trails officer for the Lapalala Wilderness School for five months in 1988. This involved taking schoolchildren on environmental education trips to the Lapalala Wilderness area in the North Western Transvaal.
