I am going to cure cancer and Alzheimer! This is what I thought when I started my BSc in Biotechnology (although I guess I am not the only one that has ever told that to themselves). At this moment, I am not so sure about it, but I still am the same enthusiastic and motivated person that said it.In fact, I sort of tried to cure some brain and memory-related diseases when I was developing my BSc degree thesis. To do so, I researched about Adult Hippocampal Neurogenesis in mice that were on a high-sodium diet. It was my first real wetlab experience and I really enjoyed it; it also made me realize the enormous potential of bioinformatics in biomedical research.As a result, I enrolled in an MSc in Computational Biology. Everything was new for me! But thanks to that, I learned a whole lot of things, specially while working on my master's thesis. For this project, I developed a machine learning classifier capable of predicting Mismatch Repair Deficiency in tumors DNA (it was the time for cancer then). The results from the classifier looked so promising that I am currently working on expanding and validating this model. But this work is almost done.Therefore, I am looking for new challenges as a bioinformatician, although I am also prepared to do some wetlab work. I would like to be enrolled in a stimulating project, that could significantly impact human health and at the same time pushes me out of the limits of my comfort zone. Hopefully, it is related to my childhood dream.
