Passionate and creative generalist in the field of applied AI and optimization, with an insatiable hunger for learning and new challenges.The role of Global R&D Expert, of which there are 10 across the whole organization, is similar to a Principal Scientist or Technical Lead in other companies, being a worldwide reference on the topic for the whole group (not just R&D), and providing support to high management in definition of strategic research lines and high-impact projects and initiatives.Through the years, I have been responsible for the conception, design, and development of solutions for decision making throughout the value chain worldwide. We work by collaborating in international, remote, multidisciplinary project teams including stakeholders from R&D, business, and operations, within an agile framework starting with an MVP and iterating in short cycles.With these projects I have had exposure not only to the operations side of the company, but also to higher level areas, such as strategy, commercial & marketing, procurement, yard & inventory management, logistics, or planning & scheduling. Together, we have built solutions based on Operations Research, Machine Learning, Optimization (including linear, convex and non-linear optimization, combinatorial optimization, multi-objective optimization, stochastic optimization, and robust optimization), Advanced Analytics, and simulation.I am a firm believer in the right tool for the job, so my technology stack includes, among others, Python (and typical Data Science libraries and frameworks: numpy, pandas, scikit-learn, matplotlib, etc.) as the main programming language, AMPL for mathematical programming (a general algebraic modelling language that can be used with solvers like Gurobi, CPLEX, Cbc, ...), Evolutionary Algorithms and other Metaheuristics; lately I am getting to know and use libraries for probabilistic models such as PyStan, GPy or Prophet, and some Game Theory algorithms.Some of the results have been published in journals and technical conferences, and I regularly take part in outreach activities, including STEM career promotion in local schools, as invited speaker for the Automation and Industrial Informatics master at University of Oviedo, presenting at conferences, and as a reviewer.
