Dr. Diego Lopez's research is dedicated to investigating the underlying risk factors and mechanisms associated with allergy development, focusing on eczema.He is co-coordinating the PEBBLES (Prevention of Eczema By a Barrier Lipid Equilibrium Strategy) 4-year follow-up assessment. The NHMRC-funded PEBBLES trial tested if the twice-daily application of EpiCeramTM, a novel skin barrier repair emollient, to the skin of neonates for six months can improve skin barrier function (as measured by skin water loss) and reduce the incidence of allergic sensitisation, food allergy and eczema by 12 months of age. The ongoing 4-year follow-up evaluation assesses the intervention's effects on asthma symptoms and lung function, with potential global implications for infant skincare practices, aiming to alleviate the burden of asthma and enhance lung health globally.He has also been involved in research assessing food allergy and ant anaphylaxis. His overarching goal is to enhance prevention and treatment strategies for allergic conditions that affect children and adults worldwide.
