Raised €2.5M to develop our anti-GA vaccine prototype (Zhou et al., EMBO Mol Med 2020) to enable a phase 1b/2a clinical trial in C9orf72 ALS in a collaboration between DZNE and Intravacc BV. The project includes improving the CMC properties of the antigen to enable GMP manufacturing, designing and outsourcing a GLP toxicology study, conducting in-house pivotal efficacy studies and business development to fund the first-in-human study.

Jun 2022 - Present

Principal Investigator

Munich Area, Germany

My research is centered on the molecular and cellular mechanisms of frontotemporal dementia (FTD) and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). I discovered the unconventional translation of the pathogenic repeat expansion upstream of the C9orf72 coding region into aggregating dipeptide repeat (DPR) proteins. As a physician by training, my main ambition is to translate this discovery into clinical application. We are analyzing the role of DPR proteins in FTD/ALS pathogenesis using biochemistry, cell biology, neuropathology and biomarker studies, and testing therapeutic approaches in our C9orf72 models.
