Dieter Freer brings broad managed care leadership expertise and more than 25 years experience in the field to Spencer Stuart’s global Life Sciences and Insurance practices. He works with clients in the individual and group health insurance sectors as well as the provider space to recruit senior executives and board directors.Extensive managed care experience:Dieter is well-versed in all aspects of the payor segment, in both for-profit and nonprofit enterprises, including distribution channel optimization, marketing, product development, healthcare financing, provider contracting, operations, IT implementation, strategy and health plan management.Most recently, Dieter served as vice president of the health plans division for Walgreens, managing relationships throughout the U.S. and Puerto Rico. He previously served as senior vice president of market segments for Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois, managing a division with more than $10 billion in revenue and 6.5 million members.He also served as a regional president and general manager at CIGNA Healthcare, improving P&L in every metric and generating profit per member well above the company average. Prior to CIGNA, Dieter served at two other Blue Cross Blue Shield plans: Horizon BCBS of New Jersey and Empire BCBS of New York.A speaker of English and German, Dieter received his Bachelor of Science degree in biology from the State University of New York at New Paltz, and has successfully completed two certificate programs at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business. He is past president of the Georgia Association of Health Plans and past director of the Georgia Health Information Exchange. He currently serves as a member of the Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago Arts Council and is a supporter of Special Olympics.
