Dietrich Stephan is a biotechnology entrepreneur and translational scientist. Dr. Stephan's goal is to significantly reduce suffering and death from disease. He has played a significant role in the sourcing, creation, team formation, financing, strategic guidance, and leadership of more than 33 private and public companies, including several which have reached valuations exceeding $1 billion. Dr. Stephan’s unique competency comes from his deep technical expertise and ability to operate across the translational spectrum, having been an academic leader in the field of genetics, having formed and led several translational genome institutes, and having partnered with many of the best healthcare investors and established pharmaceutical companies in the industry.Dr. Stephan’s career thesis originated with an early understanding that every human disease has a genetic component, and thus the genome provides an entrée into root pathogenesis and a handhold into early detection and truly effective therapies. Dr. Stephan’s interests are currently expanding to include improving the health and wellness of the mind and of the environment.Dr. Stephan previously held senior leadership roles at the Translational Genomics Research Institute (TGen), the Institute for Precision Medicine at UMPC, and the Center for Machine Learning and Health at Carnegie Mellon University. Dr. Stephan developed the vision and built the early momentum and consensus among stakeholders for the New York Genome Center. Dr. Stephan was Chairman of the Department of Human Genetics at a top 3 (in NIH funding) academic medical center. Dr. Stephan has published approximately 150 peer-reviewed publications in journals such as Science, the New England Journal of Medicine, and the Proceedings of the National Academies of Science (PNAS), yielding new insights into the workings of the brain and cancers. Dr. Stephan has trained two Siemens-Westinghouse award winners and many of his trainees have gone on to top positions in the industry. Dr. Stephan has received numerous awards for his contributions and has been featured repeatedly in the media, including several times on the front page of the Wall Street Journal. Dr. Stephan did his fellowship with Francis Collins and Jeffrey Trent at the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), holds a Ph.D. in Human Genetics from the University of Pittsburgh (from which he was honored the Legacy Laureate Award, the university’s highest alumni honor), and holds a B.Sc. in Biology from Carnegie Mellon University.
