As CEO of Metropolis Studios and previously General Manager for Sony Music, you could say I’ve had an interesting career so far. It’s certainly more than I expected from my younger self. Music was my whole world growing up, but with zero music talent, I assumed I couldn’t work in the industry. Then Frankie Goes to Hollywood happened – I had NEVER seen a group marketed like that before and knew I needed to be on the business side of the industry. So, one BTEC in Music Business Admin later, I joined Mushroom Records, and then London Records in the 90’s – marketing artists such as Peter Andre, Garbage and All Saints. I seemed to have a talent for building fan bases, creating worlds around artists which connected them with their audience and catapulted them to the top of the charts. I joined BMG and then Sony/BMG for 15 years, breaking major artists and rock acts which include Foo Fighters, Kasabian and the Kings of Leon. Behind each successful artist was a creative, targeted and unique marketing campaign. As VP, General Manager and Managing Director with Sony Music, my business skills expanded to include strategic leadership across finance, people, sales, technology and operations. Earning a reputation for fixing and innovating, I was sought out to turnaround underperforming business areas. Joining Metropolis Studios in 2017 as CEO, I manage Europe’s largest independent recording studio. I’ve led major change and transformation, also manage the studio estate and have created a world-class organisation for our customers/artists who include the biggest names in music. My work has led to receiving music industry awards, and I’ve overseen artists’ campaigns with nearly 50 Brit Awards between them, which has been an enormous privilege. One way or another, my career has revolved around people, relationships and problem solving; and I’ve made contacts with people in the industry that my 18 year-old self never dreamed would be possible! Driven by the belief we set our own limitations - my motivation comes from my Dad, who as an Indian immigrant, progressed from cleaning floors at B&Q to Chief Executive of Debenhams, Lillywhites and then holidng three Royal Warrents. These days my drive and plans for the future revolve around my incredible teenage daughter Maisie who has non-verbal complex needs and autism and inspires me every day.
