From January 1990-1993. Purchased my first retail store on a leasehold basis. The business looked tired of its layout and merchandising, therefore installed a new external signage and a new floor covering in the store. Gave the store a deep clean internally and painted it from the outside. Within twelve months the turnover went up from £2000pw to £3500pw.From January 1994-June 1994. For six months worked at a petrol station as a cashier. Duties were, filling and replenishing the selves with products that had sold during the course of the day as well as cleaning the shop side and the external forecourt. Also the reconciliation of cash balance at end of the shift.From July 1994-December 1999. Secured a Petrol Station Retail Franchise, with Save Service Station, that franchised its sites under The Frost Group. The company totally refurbished and renovated the petrol Station that had been closed for past five years, at a cost of nearly £250000.I had to develop the forecourt sales of Diesel fuel, petrol fuel and LPG (liquid petroleum gas ). In addition on the forecourt were the auxiliary units to be developed too. Theses were the airline, car wash and the vacuum line. Also the shop side had zero sales, which needed to be developed. Then, within 18 months I had through hard work and dedication built the total fuel sales to just short of 10000 litres of fuel per week. The auxiliary sale were approximately £500 per week, the internal shop sales had reached £4500 per week. I had successfully in the first 18 months managed in the forecourt shop to acquire the lottery machine with scratch cards, a coffee machine to increase footfall further. The surrounding area was beginning to be developed in 1995 and a shopping complex known as the Forster Square was built within a walking distance from my petrol station, which helped the business tremendously. At the end of December 1999, the shop sales were £7000 pw, fuel sales 12000litres pw and auxiliary sales were £1200 pw.
