My PhD research focuses on integrating advanced modeling techniques and machine learning to optimize engineering processes, with an emphasis on dynamic systems in chemical and agricultural engineering. It explores how machine learning enhances traditional modeling methods to address complex systems with time delays, non-linearities, and large datasets.Key focus areas include:1. Dynamic Process Modeling: The research reviews traditional and machine learning-based approaches for modeling time-dependent systems. It emphasizes the importance of accurate models for optimizing control strategies in complex engineering processes.2. Machine Learning: Supervised learning algorithms are central to this work, applied to solve real-world problems by enhancing predictive accuracy and managing complex datasets. The study highlights machine learning's potential to improve the efficiency and precision of dynamic system models.3. Use Cases: - Grain Drying: Modeling grain drying systems to optimize drying times, reduce energy use, and improve product quality. - Distillation Columns: Advanced models, such as the Wiener model and LSTM, are applied to enhance process control in distillation, vital for chemical separations. - Blood Glucose Control: The research explores dynamic modeling for diabetes management, focusing on artificial pancreas development. It uses population statistics and machine learning to predict blood glucose levels for better control strategies.4. Model Types: The research examines several models (Hammerstein, Wiener, LSTM, PINN) for capturing system dynamics, and proposes the Wiener Physically Informed Neural Network (W-PINN) to improve modeling accuracy in dynamic systems.Overall, the research aims to advance modeling techniques and machine learning for more efficient, reliable process control across engineering and medical applications.

Hurd Health Group is a start-up biomedical engineering company specializing in the development of cardiovascular technologies. The company is currently working with Iowa State University to receive a National Institutes of Health STTR grant to continue the research and development of a novel ventricular assist device. The device was invented by Dillon Hurd an undergraduate student in biomedical engineering.

Developed the idea for a business, doing everything from creating a business plan to getting a loan, to ordering the equipment, to calling potential customers to make appointments. That is to name a few of the things I did to launch what is now a very successful business. My share in this company was sold to my partner to allow me to focus on my current venture.
