The Ambassador Program is the University of Oregon's primary student recruitment team. Ambassadors act as a student representative of UO and recruit prospective students via campus tours, open house events, phone calls, and off-site recruitment events. As a Student Director, I coordinated, planned, and implemented group visits, assisted in recruiting, interviewing, and selecting Ambassadors, planned and executed staff training, scheduled shifts, developed statistical reports for campus officials, coordinated large visit events for thousands of guests, provided input for the direction of the program, assisted with sales and inventory, orchestrated staff meetings, and assisted with the supervision and evaluation of 70 Student Ambassadors.

My first research opportunity arose in Dr. Sara Hodges’ Social Cognition Lab where I ran a series of experiments which examined aspects of interpersonal perception and social behavior. I coded data on empathy, empathic accuracy, perspective taking, interpersonal sensitivity, and decision making. The second lab I joined was Dr. Brice Kuhl’s Memory and Attention Lab where we studied the cognitive and neural mechanisms that guide and shape our memories. I recruited participants and ran experiments using EEG to determine whether subjects were in an “encoding state” or “retrieval state.” In particular, we had subjects view stimuli that were similar to stimuli they had previously viewed (e.g., they first saw one coffee mug and then later saw a new coffee mug). We theorized that when participants see the second coffee mug, they could either encode the stimulus as a new stimulus or they could remember the coffee mug viewed earlier. We analyzed the patterns of EEG data to determine which of these two processes occurred. The third lab I joined was Dr. Sanjay Srivastava’s Personality and Social Dynamics Lab where we studied the dynamics of personality in social contexts. While I enjoyed my time exploring each of these labs, I didn’t find my passion until I began working in Dr. Nash Unsworth’s Memory Attention and Individual Differences Lab where we study memory and attention processes, as well as individual differences within those processes. I piloted and ran experiments that examine the relationships between working memory capacity, memory control, strategic search and retrieval, and the focus of attention. In addition, I wrote and presented scholarly papers for publication, including an honors thesis.

Safe Ride is a University of Oregon organization dedicated to providing safe and easily accessible alternatives to traveling alone at night. As a Safe Ride Dispatcher, I assisted in offering over 20,000 rides per year in an effort to prevent assault. Duties included answering phones, scheduling rides, coordinating with drivers, driving and navigating, and maintaining anonymity.

My job was to answer questions, refer students and parents to appropriate departments, ensure the accuracy of the information given, and help students and families determine if the UO is right for them. After one year as a student ambassador, I was promoted to the position of Senior Ambassador. Senior Ambassadors have more responsibilities within the program including training and mentoring both new and current ambassadors, providing input for the direction of the program, assisting with sales and inventory, as well as continuing the duties of an ambassador.

Students enrolled in Psychology 202 (Mind and Society) attend peer-led lab sessions as part of the course. These sessions are led by undergraduate peer leaders, who, in addition to earning credit for their involvement, gain opportunities to develop their teaching and leadership skills. As a peer lab leader, I helped the students by clarifying concepts, answering questions, and sharing my own experiences and tips for success in the course. Through this experience, I was also able to further develop my knowledge of psychology and gain experiences which will be valuable in my future educational and professional ambitions. Peer leaders enroll in a seminar designed to develop a number of specific skills related to preparation, organization, communication, presentation, and explanation.
