Right after I finished my 2 years service at the national guard of Cyprus, I decided to study biology; to gain knowledge and understand on a molecular level the science behind life. During my studies I had the opportunity to learn about a great variety of themes from evolution and genetics to molecular biology and biochemistry. Furthermore, as my 3rd year project I decided to study the brachyury gene. A gene that is essential for the correct development of an embryo but also found being active in colon cancer cells. During this project I was able to gain experience in a variety of molecular techniques. I have also worked part time at L.A. Semen Delivery Service Ltd in Cyprus where I was checking the vitality and motility of boar semen. At that time I also developed great interest in reproductive biology, and sexual and reproductive health. Hence, I applied and I was awarded with a place and partial scholarship at the University of Nottingham for a MMedSci course in Assisted Reproduction Technology. This course allowed me to gain deeper knowledge and hands-on experience in andrology including semen analysis, sperm preparation, and freezing, and embryology including IVM, IVF, ICSI, embryo culture, scoring and cryopreservation, ovarian cortical tissue cryopreservation, and laser assisted embryo biopsy and molecular analysis. Furthermore, as part requirement of my Master, I carried out a project investigating the effects of GnRH analogues on granulosa cell tumors during which I gained experience in tissue fixing and embedding, immunostaining and image analysis.
