I wholeheartedly believe that no one is unteachable. We all have the ability to adapt, learn and evolve, including myself. I am a firm believer that in order to teach the ‘unteachable’ we must first find that right method or technique to do so successfully. We have vast knowledge at our finger tips and it is up to us as educators to utilize every tool we have in our teaching tool boxes. Furthermore, I believe and gravitate towards the Behaviorist, Cognitive, Skill Learning and Interactional approaches to teaching. With brand new learners of English, I believe the use of drills, repetition and PPP (Presentation, Practice, Production) is a strong way to build a foundation to build their initial basic language knowledge. Once the basics have been taught we can then scaffold these new found skills with more advanced ones that will continue to build upon and create the framework, structure and rules surrounding the variable nuances of the English language. TPR, one on one interaction, activities, group work, visual aids, and presentations are just some of the means in which a student can obtain and build their confidence in learning a new language. My goal is to always create a safe space for my students to take a chance and make mistakes but, to know they can and will get back up on their feet and keep going on their language learning journey. My role as a teacher is to lead, inform, guide, inspire and above all else, listen, to not only what my students are telling me directly, but in what my instincts are telling as well. Teaching is not just about understanding what is said, but even more importantly, what isn’t being said. Being intuitive to your students needs is crucial for creating trust and a successful place for students to learn and grow.
