About Dina Mcqueen, M.A.

My varied life experiences, combined with a passion for other cultures, education, and literature has shown me the power of personal narrative. As I navigated the challenges, failures, and triumphs in my own life, writing became my illuminating path to expression, clarity, and ultimately healing.I am the author of Finding Aster—our Ethiopian Adoption Story, and have been a contributing writer to Huffington Post, Girlie Girl Army, In Culture Parent, and more. I created Girls Write San Diego, a teen writing collective, and I facilitate summer camp and after school workshops for those seeking a safe and welcoming space to express themselves via the practice of writing. I received my MA in Biography/Autobiography from Goddard College, and my TESOL certification from the University of California San Diego. I am currently working towards my TESOL MA at NDNU, which will be completed fall 2022. As well, I attended San Francisco State University’s School of Cinema, where I focused on screenwriting and documentary filmmaking. I studied story structure with screenwriter John Truby, and participated in fiction workshops at Venice’s famed Beyond Baroque. I currently live in North County San Diego with my artist husband, teenage daughter, a bonded pair of loving rescue kitties.

I started Girls Write San Diego in early 2020 when the pandemic was raging, prior to any visible light at the end of the tunnel. I had envisioned going into community spaces, where I would facilitate after school and weekend teen writing workshops. The pandemic shuttered these public spaces, however, and my vision did not come to fruition. As that door shut, though, another opened wider. Girls Write found new ways for teens to write together in a safe, supportive, student-led creative environment. We now offer a variety of multi-gender summer camps because the times we are living through demand creative support for everyone. Though there will always be a space just for girls, we now can enjoy the varied voices with perspectives that broaden our POVs, and provide empathy and compassion just when the world needs it the most.In addition to summer writing camps and after school programs at Pacific Ridge School in Carlsbad, I also offer one-on-one sessions for those seeking a writer’s coach, English and ESL tutoring, or those who wish to explore writing therapy. —Dina McQueen
