Lewisham

Working within the Borough of Lewisham, based at Specialist hub school Drumbeat, I provide highly specialised behavioural outreach service to schools in the area and within Drumbeat school itself. According to the demand for behavioural support, I work closely with with young people whose challenging behaviour means that they are often not able to be included in mainstream and other school setting easily. I also work closely with the professionals at each facility, identifying training needs, planning and implementing behavioural strategies, including the recording, monitoring and assessment of behaviour. I also also work closely with the social workers and the borough to integrate and include young people into appropriate services that meet individual unique needs.

Newham

In addition to my role as behavioural support worker, I taught for several days a week within the Additional learning needs department, devising and delivering a highly tailored curriculum based on attainable targets for severely autistic young people. I used visualised scheduling to develop an independent approach to learning utilising computer programmes such as Symwriter, Activinspire and powerpoint. I was also responsible for a tutor group, meaning I had to regularly set and update target and also IEPS and Behaviour Management Plans.

Newham

Working within the Additional learning needs department of Newham College, I worked managing the behaviour and providing specialist support work to some of the most challenging young people in the Newham Borough. All of the Learners in Newham College's Focus Autism Unit suffer from severe Autism. As well as managing day to day behaviour and helping implement the curriculum; to devise Individual Learning plans and personal care plans, I also and developing a tailored sports programme for the College for Autistic Students. I deliver daily sessions centered around basic introductions to team work and ports games such as handball, football and athletics.

I led a team of approximately 20 play workers at the Newham branch of the Charity play scheme Resources for Autism. I led this club from it’s inception liaising with parents, local groups, schools and council organizations to publicise the group. I also organized open days and events before the club had officially opened to attract interests. As well as leading the team of play workers, I was responsible for organizing exciting activities for all the children of both morning and afternoon clubs and also maintaining the health and safety of the club by carrying out regular risk assessment and also providing staff with up to date information about the young people’s backgrounds and medical information.

Working for Arsenal Football Club’s community department I managed a Disability Football Project. I delivered a schools programme of football coaching based mainly in the north London area. I started this schools project with impairment specific groups such as autism, deaf/hard of hearing and speech/language and communication impairments; but expanded to coaching inclusion groups such as at Robert Blair Primary School in Islington where I ran several inclusive football sessions for the Language Communications Resources pupils alongside their mainstream peers. I also delivered open Football sessions in the community of North London for Deaf young people, visually impaired young people and Adults with learning difficulties. My other responsibilities include creating and maintaining relationships with schools, council organisations and charities, monitoring and evaluating the disability football project to create funding reports and also co-ordinating all the volunteers that work regularly on the disability football project. Alongside my own projects I assist in the delivery of a wide range of projects at Arsenal in the community such as Football on Estates, Arsenal National Citizenship Service Scheme, Arsenal’s joint project with the medical Foundation for refugees victims of torture – joining football training and ESOL, Arsenal’s Mental Health Football project ‘Imagine Your Goals’ and also ‘The Double Club’; Arsenal’s numeracy and literacy schools programme.

I was a member of Arsenal’s intake of trainee coaches for the 2008/2009 Season. I took part in regular coach education sessions thrice weekly and spent the remaining time running a special project at Treehouse School, piloting a football project for severely autistic children; I subsequently made a module using these football sessions that is currently used as a coach/teacher education tool, thereupon I continued to expand upon this module as part of Arsenal’s disability Football Project. In April 2009, I travelled to Singapore to spend 6 months coaching at one of Arsenal’s International Soccer schools (JSSL) and also at a local school; Yangzheng Primary School on behalf of JSSL.

I worked with the Substance Misuse Team in the Youth Offending Unit at Southwark Council. I undertook general administrative duties such as compiling monthly and quarterly reports and minute taking. I also assisted with court visits that the drug officers carried out to interview potential young offenders.

During this temporary contract at Newham College of Further Education, I occupied a role as an Enrichment Officer in the Enrichment and Welfare faculty of Newham College. Key duties included aiding the supervision and day to day running of the ‘Student Life’ area of the college; Organising clubs/societies and extra curricular activities for students – particularly focused on Black History Month during October – and inducting students into the enrichment and welfare programme of the college. Other facets of the role included counselling, careers advice and youth work. I was in charge of organising trips and visits for Students at Newham College and events such as the college Valentine’s ball and the college talent show (‘N-FACTOR’). The role also included departmental administration activities.
