MacroPolo is a China-focused think tank, and part of the Paulson Institute. During my time there, I launched "The Cleanup," a research project focused on explaining how China is attempting to clean up its financial system while maintaining economic growth and stability. My research included deep dive explorations of how:° the focus of PBOC monetary policy has shifted toward ensuring the stability of small banks;° China is attempting a slow moving cleanup of its financial system that would be impossible in market economies;° the financial authorities implemented a unique suite of tools to deal with bad loans;° attempts to increase lending to small firms failed due to political compromise between banks and regulators. The research was distributed to a mix of institutional investors, financial services firms, government agencies, and multilateral financial institutions.

The Woodrow Wilson Center for International Scholars is a Washington DC-based think tank focused on international issues that are relevant to the United States. I was there as one of only 19 fellows selected for its flagship fellowship program. I used my time at the Center to write, "China's Great Wall of Debt: Shadow Banks, Ghost Cities, Massive Loans, and the End of the Chinese Miracle," my book on the mechanics of China's financial system and political economy. It was an opportunity to draw together the various strands of my reporting in China into a bigger picture; to augment my journalism with academic research; and to supplement my understanding of China's economy by finding parallels elsewhere in the world.
