Creative Director & Ambassador
FAD came about as a result of Anthony Balsamo and I connecting at the Australian Institute of Architects. As two engaged and active young architects who aren’t afraid of getting our hands dirty, we believed in the importance of promoting discussion about the built environment and design in South Australia. FAD is an investment in the future. It provides a platform for heightened discussion outside the daily grind of practice, as well as an opportunity to include the public in the debate. It’s a vehicle for grass roots discussions that raises awareness and knowledge over time. The aim is to enable architects and designers together with the community and policy shapers to engage in a higher level of conversation about the future of our urban environment. It’s important to empower people to have their own voice and to build ownership of decision making through genuine consultation. Real sustainable change is possible when people feel empowered and understand the context within which decisions are made. These conversations will be had by the people that design our homes, schools and our hospitals, the streets we walk and the parks in which we play. The ideas shared in this forum will ultimately find their way into our built environment.
Associate / Strategic Development
I was an Associate at GGA with a particular focus on Strategic Development. Having completed my Master of Architecture in 2008, I went on to work on a wide range of projects including all levels of the educational sector, multiple arts, cultural & tourist facilities, multi-story commercial & warehouse facilities, service and health industry fitouts, high density residential developments as well as multiple award winning residential projects.I was a Project architect for three significant projects – Oran Park School in NSW (3,000 students & $78m project value), Pembroke Middle School Redevelopment ($26m project value) & Tea Tree Gully Services Centre ($12m project value) in SA . In addition to my duties as a Project Architect, as an Associate, I was tasked with the role of Strategic Development at GGA. In this role I actively facilitated new relationships and capabilities across various sectors to provide opportunities for GGA to bring their collective smarts to new and existing projects and ventures. My extensive network provided immense value to the practice and our clients to help realise positive project outcomes and relationships.
Chapter Councillor
I was a two term Councillor of the Australian Institute of Architects SA Chapter and a passionate advocate of the profession and the benefits of good design. I was appointed Co-Creative Director of the inaugural Festival of Architecture and Design and served in this role for the second, more expanded iteration in 2016.
2015 Fellow
Established in 2007 following a bequest from the estate of the late modernist architectural figure Jack Hobbs McConnell who died in 2005 aged 92, the Fellowship is for promising designers, who might ultimately practice in South Australia, to undertake an independent program of research or course of further study in Architecture or a related field. As the 2015 Fellow, my chosen field of study was the growing field of modular construction. My particular interest lies in the advances that are being made in modular construction that can be adapted for commercial, infrastructure and residential projects. This, I believed would encourage South Australia to become an incubator for the development of future building technologies and promote new growth in the manufacturing industry. I evaluated the current capability in South Australia before exploring interstate fabrication facilities capable of producing structures from basic dwelling units up to multi-story apartment complexes. I worked with a national construction company to provide access to projects in remote areas of Australia and then accompany staff to inspect their work in South East Asia. The final part of the research involved travel to Europe to visit leading modular construction companies and gain exposure to best practice examples.
