I am excited to be on the committee for the North East FTSS as the medical student representative bridging the transitional gap between medical students and FY trainees. Through this role I aspire to design new courses and talks to help medical students and surgical trainees to gain experience in teaching and mastering surgical skills.

I collaborated with surgical trainees in the region to design a basic surgical skills course called “Incision to Closing 101”. This course was designed to instill core surgical skills and allow students to learn basic suturing techniques. I was able to adapt to social distancing measures and host the sessions virtually to welcome more students in the region.

I had to chair weekly meetings and delegate tasks among committee members to ensure that fundraisers carried out aligned with the university’s safety policies. I also had to create workshops for members of the society to discuss pertinent campaigns carried out by UNICEF.

I organized fundraising events which collectively raised over £3,000 for charities and hospitals. As the main organizer for these events, I had to coordinate with different team members and ensure that people were comfortable with the tasks delegated to them. An event I organized, Strictly Come Dancing, was also nominated for the Best Society Performance Award at the annual Celebrating Success Awards ceremony.

I had the privilege of guiding my mentees during their transition to university life and I ensured that everyone felt comfortable in a new city. I met with them occasionally to discuss any problems they had and gave them advice or directed them to the relevant authorities within the university.

I was elected by my fellow course mates to attend Student-Staff Committee meetings in order to find solutions to problems raised by the student body. I also had the responsibility of conveying the information discussed to the students in my seminar group.

I led a team of executive committee members to organize the fifth largest student run Model UN conference in the world. I coordinated with faculty advisors of local and international schools to ensure that the comfort of 500+ delegates prevailed throughout the 3-day conference.
