About Dion Dawson

Dion Dawson is the Founder and Chief Dreamer of Dion’s Chicago Dream, an innovative nonprofit social enterprise combatting food insecurity at the intersection of logistics and last-mile delivery. He is a TEDx speaker, an Aspen Institute Food Fellow, an Echoing Green Fellow, and a U.S. Navy veteran.Dion’s mission is to challenge the solvency of food insecurity through the stabilization of the supply chain, using data-driven operations, consistent quality, and a deep commitment to a resident-informed process that meets residents and recipients where they are. He prioritizes the end-user experience and has reinvigorated the traditional food distribution model. Since June 2020, the Fund has distributed a total of $9,917,150 to 139 grantees. The Chicago Region Food System Fund focuses on COVID-19 related response and building resilience in the local food system, an area approximately 200 miles from Chicago (about a day’s drive to/from the city). Priority has been given to organizations producing food in, and supplying food to, communities of color. Fresh Taste, fiscally sponsored by Forefront, manages the Fund. The Steering Committee is composed of six community representatives and three funder representatives. The Committee is majority community representatives to center the voices of on-the-ground practitioners with extensive experience in the local food system. CRFSF placed priority on members from BIPOC communities without making that a requirement. Currently, program officers representing foundations who fund CRFSF round out the group.

The American Express NGen Fellows program, part of the American Express Leadership Academy, offers a transformative opportunity for changemakers, age 40 and under, to strengthen their leadership capacity, hone their change-making skills, and build connections with some of the social sector’s most influential leaders. Every year the NGen Fellows program selects 12 individuals to participate in a nine-month leadership development program. The program centers on six core results. By the end of the Fellows experience changemakers will have furthered their practice of self-awareness, racial equity, adaptive leadership, using a results based frame, systems change, and developing a network of peers. These results serve as a foundational framing to accelerate peer learning among cohort members.
