I am an experimental Physicist engaged in nanofabrication of optical materials for light control. I use Laser Interference Lithography, E-beam lithography, reactive ion etching and cost-effective self-assembly, nanopatterning, imprint patterning, soft lithography, and physical vapor deposition techniques as tools to fabricate periodically structured materials. I am an expert in fabricating photonic crystals that operate in the visible, ultraviolet, and deep ultraviolet wavelength region. Using photonic crystals I manipulate the excited-state lifetimes of emitters in organic or inorganic materials. This is useful in realizing efficient light-emitting devices. While my research on deep ultraviolet photonic crystals paves the way forward for the development of wavelength-selective devices operating in the deep ultraviolet. Nanopatterning techniques using photonic crystals hold a lot of promise for large-area structured material fabrication that is effective for energy harvesting and sensing applications. At IISc. I am fabricating 1-D and 2-D gratings by laser interference lithography technique for guided-mode resonance devices and related applications as sensors and detectors. I am developing photonic crystal cavities using E-beam lithography techniques for infrared detector applications.

For the development of deep UV spectroscopic instrumentation, we are the first to utilize photonic crystal technology to fabricate deep UV wavelength selective elements of 30-40% efficiency. Still, there is a lot of room for improvement in the performance of these crystals. We used a cost-effective large-area fabrication method to obtain this deep UV diffracting photonic crystals on cm-scale substrates. The deep UV photonic crystals are promising for the development of deep UV optical elements and hence will play a major role in the establishment of efficient deep UV spectroscopic instrumentation. -
