Working alongside some of the nation’s leading practitioners of ERISA law as a litigation paralegal, I reported to a team of attorneys. My duties varied, but a key responsibility was to proofread and cite-check legal briefs in accordance with industry standards. The day-to-day demands of litigation keep attorneys busy, so it falls to paralegals to keep case documents and correspondence organized, a task at which I excelled. When large briefs were due to be filed with district or appellate courts, I was often responsible for excerpting, redacting, and ultimately filing exhibits comprising hundreds of pages of document discovery. As an English major at Kenyon College, my primary focus was creative writing. I’ve studied works of both modern and classic literature in small, discussion-based classes. In addition to critical analysis, I’ve worked in a series of short story-geared workshops, which form the basis of the creative writing program at Kenyon. It’s always been my dream to be a storyteller. My love of good writing combined with my strong analytical skills and solid mechanics have given me the confidence to pursue writing and art as a career. I’m currently working on my first fantasy novel.During the Trinity TESOL program in London, I studied the methodology and techniques for teaching English to foreign language learners. As part of the certificate program, I completed six hours of instruction to a group of English language students attending the Oxford International language school. In addition, I planned and executed a two-course private lesson with a student—first a skills-analysis interview, then a lesson tailored to his needs.
