In 2020, Dirk Werle joined the Canadian Space Agency's Space Utilization directorate on a part-time basis as a senior Earth Observation expert. At CSA he supports a variety of education and communication related projects. Examples include the annual "Indigenous Mapping Workshop" (together with CSA and NASA colleagues), the Canadian SAR Applications MOOC "Winter-Water-Warming" on the European EO-College online learning platform (together with CSA, Canadian Government experts and colleagues at the Friedrich Schiller University in Jena, Germany), and CSA's "Satellite Art" initiative (together with CSA and Canadian EO industry colleagues). He is a contributor to several entries in the CSA and Public Health Agency Canada open-access book "Earth Observation, Public Health, and One Health Activities, Challenges and Opportunities" (CABI Publishing, 2022) including a chapter on Earth Observation during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Dirk Werle's professional career as a geographer has focused on the use of Earth observation satellites for natural resource management and environmental monitoring. Since the mid 1980s he has developed an expertise in imaging radar applications, initially through work with the German Aerospace Center and the Canadian RADARSAT Project Office. He actively participated in numerous space technology outreach, market assessment, commercialization and applications development programs in Canada and internationally. At ÆRDE Environmental Research he has carried out project work on behalf of the Canada Centre for Remote Sensing, Environment Canada, the Canadian Space Agency, and the Defense Research Establishment. He received appointments as Adjunct Professor at several universities teaching Remote Sensing of the Environment. He has been a lecturer in the International Ocean Institute training program for ocean governance for the past 20 years.Dirk Werle served as an advisor to several committees and non-governmental organizations. He received a two-year appointment from the Canadian Government to chair the National Remote Sensing Working Group for the Environment. He was a founding member and a former president of the Alliance for Marine Remote Sensing. He is an member of the Canadian Remote Sensing Society and served as officer and president of the Society for six years. In 2010, he was appointed as a director of the International Ocean Institute Canada Association.He has published articles on Earth observation satellite applications in national and international conference proceedings and scientific journals. Together with his colleagues in Canadian industry he has prepared many contractor reports. He authored the first and second edition of "Radar Remote Sensing Training Manual" and contributed to several new media education packages.
