My research group is primarily interested in bacterial adhesion - the process that bacteria use to stick to surfaces and cells. As a consequence of this, we study processes such as transport to and from the bacterial cell surface, biofilm formation, and other microbial processes. We do not work on a single pet organism, but instead like to compare microbial mechanisms across different species. Our focus are Gram-negative pathogens that can infect humans as well as animals. In our studies, we use interdisciplinary methods from microbiology, structural biology, bioinformatics, and biophysics, but also chemistry and nanoscience. As many of our systems of study are membrane proteins, we consider ourselves experts in membrane biology, protein biochemistry, detergents, and lipids.
