About Sumit Gupta

With 30+ years of experience in various technology-related roles, I’ve founded and co-founded several startups, and have advised others on technical, operational, as well as business models. I specialise in architecting massive-scale web applications, creating and managing engineering orgs, global vendor management etc. What interests me most is digital media, and massive-scale internet applications. Luckily Rightster - which I co-founded with Charlie Muirhead and Tabitha Goldstaub offers both: we specialise in global delivery, management, and monetisation of digital video. And we are very, very good at it. In the past, I worked at t5m, also in the digital video domain. Prior to that, I architected some of the biggest google gadgets in India at the time for a gaming company. Earlier, I headed tech for an e-learning company that ran a beta across 3500 schools across India. The design enabled offline use of digital media across schools in far-flung areas with intermittent connectivity, bringing the digital revolution to small towns. My association with education goes back a long way, having conducted trainings for many years, including lectures at IIT Delhi. In the last decade or so, I’ve mainly worked with startups, helping them bloom into mature companies, but in the past, I’ve created several unique products of my own. Some with global acclaim are Tarantula, the world’s first WYSIWYG web authoring tool with pixel-level layout control, written almost 18 years ago, and AudioManage, written in 2005, which revolutionised audio management from home-users to radio stations. In some of the service-oriented companies I founded, our solutions varied from telecom automation and satellite internet services, to custom computing devices etc.In my spare time I like tinkering with my RPi and Arduino, do home-makeovers, build on my home theatre and try to automate the hell out of everything at home, much to my son’s amusement and wife’s consternation.

    Co-Founder, Cto
    Rightster Sep 2010 - Jun 2015
    London, London, Gb
I co-founded Rightster with Charlie Muirhead (the CEO of t5m, my previous company), when while working at t5m we realized that there was a need for a platform that helps people monetize online video. Rightster’s business revolves around rights-managed video distribution and monetization. We currently do around 2 billion monthly video views across our publisher network, including at YouTube where we are the biggest MCN in the world (outside of the US). Off YouTube, we served roughly 10 Petabytes of video last year, with over 4 million videos added to the platform in that time. I was responsible for end-to-end platform architecture, with several major aspects:- Upload once, monetize anywhere platform, supporting thousands of publishers, OVPs and aggregators like YouTube, Brightcove, Ooyala, Dailymotion etc.- High volume video CMS, including ingest, transcoding, storage, and egest.- Content acquisition from satellite to video production systems.- Content distribution to custom player as well as 3rd party systems, including broadcast.- Contracts and deals enforced while distribution – geo-blocking, windowing, takedown etc.- Full support for VoDs as well as live-streaming.- Vendor agnostic architecture for services like storage, CDN etc.,.- SOA, distributed sub-systems – high availability and scalability.- Massive amounts of video engagement data captured and analyzed using big-data systems for quick turnaround on reporting.- Automated video engagement and deal-based revenue reporting.- Real-time, near-realtime, daily and monthly dashboards for monitoring, revenues, and engagement.- b2b systems on physical hardware, b2c systems on EC2 for on-demand scaling.- High concurrency live-streaming (supported upwards of 100,000 sustained concurrent streams during the Royal Wedding in UK).- Setting-up the dev centers in Delhi, London and Bangalore.Rightster is listed (RSTR.L) on the LSE, and has a presence in 12 countries globally.

    T5M Mar 2008 - Apr 2011
    London, Gb
After a couple of months, when I moved full-time to t5m, my significant contributions to the business were:- Total re-architecting of platform to move from Microsoft to open-source technologies.- Massive reduction in platform operating expenses (down to 10% of original cost)- Technology partner selection and managing those relationships.- Setting up London and Delhi development centers.- Straddling both the Product and Engineering teams for quick turn-around (or shoot-down) of ideas.- Technical and Product vision of the company.t5m was bought over by Rightster, a company I co-founded with Charlie Muirhead.
  • T5M
    Technology Consultant
    T5M Sep 2007 - Feb 2008
    London, Gb
t5m was a business that primarily dealt with premium video content production and distribution. It had a significant charity angle, and was launched by Nelson Mandela in Dec 2007. The platform was meant to be a showcase for Microsoft Silverlight, a direct competitor of Adobe Flash. I was looped in to help with transitioning the business to India and setting up a team to continue development in India.
  • Nostrum Global
    Founder & Ceo
    Nostrum Global 1992 - 2010
Nostrum Global was createdl to create niche solutions few in India would work on. Some achievements of the day:- Indian Army, Navy, Air Force among major clients- Created portable computing devices from scratch (H/W & S/W)- Online-offline integrated information solutions for Xerox Corp for use in more than 200 countries.- One of the first chat servers in gaming consoles (Sega Dreamcast)- Touch-screen based docketless exchange system for Army HQ- End-to-end customer onboarding solutions for all major Indian ISPs like like HCL, Wipro, VSNL, Roltanet, BPL etc.- Satellite internet accessibility solutions.Around mid-90s, I wrote ‘Tarantula’, the world’s first WYSIWYG web authoring tool with pixel-level layout control. This tool was a major global hit, displacing the tools of the day all over the world. It was reviewed and rated highly by many global magazines of the day (ZDNet, Andover News, Chip), and later in India – with PCQuest, The Week, Computers Today, Chip India and others writing about it.Another product that I conceptualized and created from scratch in 2005 was AudioManage, that an extension to the Windows operating system giving it the ability to manage and organize audio and video content in a completely format-agnostic manner. This was the only music manager of its time that fully supported Unicode, so was at home with any language in the world. While this was a hit with users as it could almost magicaly organize large music collections, many large radio stations quickly adopted AudioManage as it could manage extremely large music collections (running into Terabytes). It could also manage offline audio, including tracks on external and offline media, such as audio CDs and networks.I also built all the required backend operations, from credit-card handling systems (rudimentary payment gateways, most banks were not e-enabled back then), to CRM and registration and key management systems. AudioManage also had multiple e-commerce touch-points.
  • Actonme Inc.
    Director Of Engineering
    Actonme Inc. Nov 2006 - Feb 2008
ActOnMe Inc, later Oxylabs, was one of the first Indian online gaming companies. In it’s original avatar, I architected apps and co-product managed interactive apps for MySpace (then the dominant social networking platform). ActOnMe was responsible for building some of the biggest Google Gadgets out of India at the time, hitting MySpace, Orkut, Hi5 and several other platforms with a build once deploy anywhere engine. I was responsible for - Building core team. - Defining development tools, platforms, and strategies. - Design and implementation of portal/content delivery optimization techniques. - Designing of network infrastructure for reliability and scalability. - Helping with business plan in conjunction with development plans.
  • Total Learning Sources
    Cto
Total Learning Sources Oct 2005 - Oct 2006
TLS was formed to enable students at home and schools across India to access quality education. The unpredictable nature of Internet connectivity in India posed unique challenges in the architecture. I was responsible for building the core development team and selecting and implementing technologies to align with business strategies. I also helped with business planning in conjunction with development plans. The pilot project was to be undertaken in 3,500 schools across Punjab, under the aegis of the Sarva Siksha Abhiyan, a program by the Government of India to provide education for all. This was the first time multimedia resources were made available to students, some who had never even seen a computer earlier. Education being a cause close my heart, this was a thoroughly satisfying engagement.
