For two decades, Theresa Metzmaker has been actively involved in the disability justice community. She served as a Professional Fellows Mentor for the Disability Activism Shaping Participatory Democracy Professional Fellows program for Albania, Bulgaria, Hungary, Romania, Slovakia, and the United States of America in 2018-2019. Theresa believes her work is always rooted in ending violence. She cares deeply about the inclusion of youth with disabilities who are in foster care and their families (bio, foster, guardian, kinship, and family of choice). She is a dynamic speaker who uses personal experience to actively engage audiences in conversations around disability identity and able-bodied privilege. Theresa is available to present disability inclusion and disability justice to your organization. While her trainings are open to all organizations, she is incredibly passionate about working with organizations to end domestic violence and sexual assault and organizations that serve young women. Theresa has successfully served as the lead or sole grant writer for RFPS, awarded over eight million dollars in total.Theresa has facilitated disability retreats, awareness/anti-ableism workshops, and leadership development programs. She has also co-authored a leadership development curriculums and training tools for people with and without disabilities.She was featured as a "People We Love" in YES! Magazine's Summer 2013 issue for the teen girls' program she developed, "Her Power! Her Pride! Her Voice!". This program uses interactive art activities to challenge media stereotypes/lies and shatter myths about what it means to be a teen girl with a disability. Theresa is a founding member and organizer of Weaving the Symbolic (a feminist/disability reading group). Authored grant proposals that were awarded over eight million dollars. Coordinate and develop all financial contracts with partner organizations and individual contractors for fiduciary contracts. Intentional expansion of MDRC’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion goals. Expanded funding for programs for BIPOC community members, run by BIPOC staff, to over half our Leadership program funds. Led goal expansion to increase all leadership program participation to over 60% BIPOC participants. Provide direct supervision to 20 staff setting, clear goals, and expectations, developing and managing subcontracts, performing human resource direction, and providing overall organizational support. Manage human resource operations, policies, and procedures, and work with the 30 staff members to understand their benefits. Led policy change for paid parental leave, domestic and sexual violence policy, expansion of holidays paid time off, and overhauled various policies in the employee manual, providing the organization and staff protections from costs and liability. Maintain a working knowledge of significant developments and trends in the field of leadership for people with disabilities. Developed and delivered presentations at the local, statewide, and national level reaching an audience of over 20,000 individuals.
