The New Sector RISE fellowship is a nationally competitive leadership development program for early career professionals committed to becoming social sector leaders. I received 200+ hours of training on topics like nonprofit finance, monitoring and evaluation, development, and strategy, 1:1 mentorship, and completed a capacity building project at my host site, IDEO.org.

Camotes Islands, Philippines

As Site Coordinator, I managed an infrastructure rehabilitation budget of $40,000, including the reconstruction of 3 primary clinics, installation of water purification systems in 4 clinics, and coordination of 8 international volunteers. As a part of Project HOPE's health systems strengthening focus, I developed a unique partnership between Project HOPE and the Cebu Provincial Government to reduce health workforce shortage by hiring a doctor to perform medical outreach rotations in rural areas of the Camotes Islands. Additionally, I facilitated two global health educational programs in collaboration with the Health Global Policy Institute in Tokyo, Japan for 24 students, educating them about rural health development, health workforce shortage and entrepreneurship in the global health space. Finally, I fostered partnerships with corporate sponsors and private foundations resulting in renewed funding for the continuity of Project HOPE programming in the Pacific Rim.

Camotes Islands, Philippines

I provided immediate logistical and operational support for Project HOPE’s post-typhoon Yolanda medical relief programming. After the immediate humanitarian need passed, I conducted strategic health systems mapping for the island group and developed a project plan to guide partnership development with four island municipalities for long-term health systems strengthening projects.

Chennai, India

As a Shakti Fellow, I conducted ethnographic research on institutional responses to sexual violence in Chennai by interviewing 45 professionals in health, law, criminal justice, and NGO sectors. I also oversaw and implemented a needs assessments with health professionals on ways to better responses to survivors of sexual violence in the health sector.

As a Program Intern, I provided broad technical and administrative support to staff by taking meeting minutes, disseminating program materials to domain partners, and providing monthly briefs on state and national legislature on childhood obesity. Additionally, I contributed to social media presence by producing marketing materials like newsletters, press releases, online content and created a system to monitor and analyze web traffic. I also supported Initiative campaigns including 5210 Every Day!, Cilantro to Stores, and Healthy Works! as well as Biannual Legislator’s Breakfasts and Monthly Domain Partner meetings.

La Jolla, Ca

I entered, coded, and analyzed large data sets on diet composition of Hadza hunter-gatherers to create a complete macronutrient composition of the Hadza diet under the supervision of Dr. Alyssa Crittenden. I also inventoried and catalogued over 1500 Chimpanzee x-ray films as well as two anthropological libraries, including both books and reprints of scientific articles.
