About Divya Saravana
With roots in both India and Singapore, I'm a passionate and energetic food systems professional. My career spans a diverse trajectory as I went from being a trained chef to a food systems economist. I have a Bachelor's degree in Culinary Arts and Food Business Management from The Culinary Institute of America and a Masters in Agriculture and Food Systems Economics and Policy from Tufts University - Friedman School. My career has been driven by one core question - “how do we drive the demand and uptake of foods, practices and policies that lead to a sustainable, equitable, just and healthy food system?” To answer this, I worked at a Michelin-starred restaurant kitchen focussed on local sourcing, then went on to do research in behavioural economics and food choice architecture at Google Food and marketing at PlantBased Solutions. After my Masters, I worked at the Poverty Action Lab (J-PAL) engaging with the Tamil Nadu Government to evaluate the impact of social welfare policies in public health, nutrition and agriculture. At GFI India, I resonate with the promise of alternative proteins for a sustainable food system and use my multidisciplinary background to advance the space in product development, opening up channels for adoption and positioning for consumers.I'm also keenly interested in food literacy. With my zeal for cooking and farming, I want to change the way we think about the food system. Connecting consumers and growers and educating the public on where their food comes from. Working on propagating urban/home farming and food literacy to improve resilience, nutrition and diversity in our diet, develop respect for the growing of food and create more connected, equitable and sustainable urban food environments.
Listed skills include Leadership, Monitoring And Evaluation, Collaborative Problem Solving, Economic Data Analysis, and 64 others.
