My name is Dennis Doan, and my journey is a reflection of resilience, determination, and the belief that creativity can transform lives. I grew up in a close-knit, predominantly immigrant community in San Diego, California, as a proud second-generation Vietnamese-American. Despite the challenges that came with navigating social and economic barriers, I graduated high school with honors and earned a full scholarship to San Diego State University with the goal of becoming a plastic surgeon. But life had other plans. Financial limitations forced me to leave college and carve out a different path—one that led me to tattoo artistry. At 20 years old, I co-founded my first business, which eventually grew into a portfolio of three tattoo studios. My art became a platform to challenge stereotypes and address critical issues, including the rise of violence against the AAPI community. Along the way, I’ve worked to change how people view tattooing—as both an art form and a means of expression. Now, I’m channeling that experience into something greater. As the founder of Doan Incorporated (The Doan Foundation), a nonprofit organization, I’m focused on empowering teens in underserved communities to pursue careers in the arts. In 2024, I had the privilege of being appointed as a Commissioner for Arts and Culture for the City of San Diego, where I advocate for equitable opportunities and champion the voices of communities that have too often been overlooked. This work is about creating change, building opportunities, and inspiring the next generation of artists and visionaries. #AdvocateForChange #CommunityEmpowerment #ArtsAndCulture #NonProfitLeader
