ResponsibilitiesI managed the server side engineering team. Our responsibilities revolved around maintaining the state, configuration and watering schedule for hundreds of thousands of physical irrigation controllers and auxiliary devices.I coordinated the overall system architecture and messaging protocols across 4 client application teams, the server team, and the firmware team.I also worked with the teams to ensure we maintained consistent code quality, testing standards, and effective build pipelines across the dev department.While at Rachio, my focus was to solve infrastructure and organizational scaling issues. We solved these issues by:Implementing a centralized build, test, and deployment infrastructure used by all teams and platformsExpanded and centralized logging and monitoring infrastructureHired a QA engineer to assist all teams in implementing automated test platformsMigrated, as much as possible, business logic out of firmware and client code and into the server platformTransitioned the server platform to a micro-service based architecture built on a data pipeline coreThe data management structure I designed has become the backbone of a new data analytics product that is proving to be a critical component of the company’s growth going forward.

Designed and built a text message marketing platform. The web front-end allows the user to build a database of customer cell phone numbers and send text messages to their database. The backend handles the sending and receiving of text messages, monitors usage, tracks payments, balances workload, and tracks failures.Assisted in the execution of various business tasks including: sales, accounting, cost/benefit analysis, revenue projections, etc.

Qualys provides a number of cloud security and vulnerability analysis services.While I was there, I managed a small group of server side engineers across three offices. We focused on using Java, Oracle DB, Elasticsearch, and Kafka to deliver high performance and scalable data processing and management solutions. Our focus was on building the infrastructure that ingested data from customer installs, performing vulnerability analysis on the data, and storing the results for use by the UI teams to generate reports and metrics.In my capacity as manager, I also worked closely with Quality Assurance, Operations, and Project Management departments to ensure our projects were deployed in a timely manner and meshed with the timelines and projects of other teams in the company.During my time at Qualys, I focused on two primary goals:1) DevOps - I worked towards improving our ability to manage our systems infrastructure and project dependencies. The goal was to improve our ability in the Dev department to test our work product in environments as close to production as possible. Towards those ends, I introduced Docker and related technologies into the company and worked closely with QA and OPS teams to integrate modern container solutions into the existing build/release/deployment infrastructure.2) Data pipeline processing - The original vulnerability analysis system was built around a highly vertically scaled Oracle database. My focus was on transitioning the company to a more horizontally scalable data pipeline architecture. I introduced ElasticSearch and Kafka into the Development department and I was a driving force in building new functionality and porting existing solutions to the new architecture in an effort to relieve pressure from and work around existing bottlenecks.

I was originally hired as a Test Engineer. In early 2005, I began working on software development projects. Between 2005 and late 2006, I transitioned from programming in my off hours to development being my primary focus. After 2006, I continued to consult on forensic analysis, source code review, and other special projects until mid 2010. Since 2010, the group I lead has steadily grown in size, scope, and responsibility. I now co-manage a 20 person group that is responsible for all software development in the company.
