I joined Harper Macleod in 2010 from Wright, Johnston & Mackenzie where I carried out the legal work for developers, landowners or planning authorities on some of Scotland`s largest Renewable developments including Windy Standard (1996), Novar (1997), Beinn Ghlas (1999), Deucheran Hill (2001), Bowbeat (2002), Crystal Rig (2004), Causeymire (2004), Rothes (2005), Paul`s Hill (2006), Steven`s Croft (2007), Dalswinton (2008), Green Knowes (2008) and North Rhins (2010). Since joining HM I helped developers complete the Crystal Rig 2 (2010) Rosehall (2012) Rothes 2 (2013) Mid Hill (2014) Crystal 3 (2016) and Windy Standard 2 (2017) wind farms; assisted Knowes and Berwickshire Housing Assocs on the installation of pv panels on over 500 properties and acquired the Afton, Neilston, Solwaybank and Windy Standard wind farms and Peacehill AD plant for investors (2016-21). Myself and my teams acted on transactions contributing over 6GWs to Scotland's operational renewable electricity installations.Acted as Co. Secretary/ Legal Adviser to Scottish Renewables from 2000 to 2020 and as a Non-Exec Director of Natural Power Consultants from 2008 to 2022. After retiring from HM in 2024 I joined FORL to advise on the legal aspects of their land developments. I have also contributed widely to industry magazines and spoken at, and chaired, Energy conferences over the last 20 years, run a successful Renewables workshop at Glasgow University for 4 years and given guest lectures to students at Glasgow, Edinburgh and Stirling universities. I was described by the Scotsman newspaper in 2006 as ‘the man acknowledged as Scotland’s authority on renewable energy law’, won the prestigious ‘Partner of the Year’, Award at the Scottish Legal Awards in 2006 for my work in Renewable Energy, was described in Chambers 2008 as ‘a standout figure in the sector’ whose knowledge of wind farms is ‘second to none’ and am currently one of the Band One ranked Scottish Energy lawyers in each of Chambers and Legal 500`s 2022 guides to the legal profession. In each of 2011, 2013 and 2016, I led the Harper Macleod team to Energy Team of the Year Award at the Scottish Law Awards.
