Co-Founder & CTO at Sintela. Sintela provides optical fiber based sensing solutions that enable customers to apply advanced sensing technology to their business Since helping to originate fiber-optic Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) in 1996, I’ve become a leading figure in the field, applying the technology across a range of industries and driving innovation. In 2009 I was the first person to demonstrate the use of DAS for oil & gas downhole monitoring. Before co-founding Sintela I was, among other roles, Senior Fellow at QinetiQ and co-founder/CTO of Optasense which I helped grow to become at the time the largest business in the DAS industry. PhD in Physics20 patents granted2017-18 Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) Distinguished LecturerRoyal Academy of Engineering MacRobert Award finalist

Co-Founder And Chief Technology OfficerSintelaDorchester, Gb -
Co-Founder & Chief Technology OfficerSintela Nov 2017 - PresentPill, Bristol, Somerset, GbMy focus is to provide technical assurance in our business development activities and to foster close and productive relationships with our partners and customers across application areas which include perimeter and border protection, defence, rail and road transportation, pipeline monitoring and upstream oil and gas. -
Co-Founder & Chief Technology OfficerOptasense Jan 2008 - Aug 2017Roanoke, Virginia, UsAs the co-founder of OptaSense, a QinetiQ business, I had a pivotal role in building it from a handful of people into the internationally recognised leader in the field of Distributed Acoustic Sensing. The challenge was to introduce our new sensing technology into a wide range of markets overturning conventional thinking in the understanding of how sensing can be performed. I was responsible for prioritising development activity and communicating our technical strategy to key stakeholders as well as being a regular speaker at conferences and technical workshops.I worked closely with a broad and diverse range of customers to understand their technical requirements and was responsible for formulating the technical aspects of research proposals that resulted in over $60 million of commercially funded research and development activity. I spent much of my time helping to develop the oil & gas business but I also spent time overseeing the technical developments in the transport, security and defence areas of the business, identifying new application areas and patenting new ideas. -
Senior FellowQinetiq Jan 2012 - Feb 2017Farnborough, Hampshire, Gb -
Team Leader - Fibre Optic SensorsQinetiq Mar 1996 - Jan 2008Farnborough, Hampshire, GbI was one of the original members, and ended up leading the team, formed to develop fibre-optic sensors for naval applications. During this period I developed novel fibre-optic sensor arrays, including accelerometers and electro-magnetic sensors as well as hydrophones based upon interferometric and fibre laser devices, utilising both time and wavelength division multiplexing techniques. I successfully developed civil commercial interest in the groups' technology and capabilities. This attracted significant investment and resulted in the formation and eventual spinout of a company called Stingray Geophysical Ltd which developed fibre-optic sensing arrays for seismic Permanent Reservoir Monitoring (PRM) During this period I developed the business case for, and was successful in being awarded, substantial internal investment to develop fibre-optic Distributed Acoustic Sensing technology. I was instrumental in bringing in an outside company to develop the hardware and using internal resource to develop the software, algorithms and data processing capabilities to form a DAS product. This then led to the formation of OptaSense Ltd. -
Research Scientist - Active SonarQinetiq Jul 1991 - Mar 1996Farnborough, Hampshire, GbI was responsible for the experimental and theoretical investigation into the detection and classification of underwater targets. This required knowledge of active Sonar related experimental techniques, the ability to design novel signal processing algorithms, and the ability to quickly analyse data. I designed and built sonar transducers and developed data capture and signal analysis software. -
ScientistQinetiq Sep 1985 - Jul 1991Farnborough, Hampshire, GbResponsible for the preparation, installation and calibration of instrumentation for shock and vibration trials. Performed waterborne transient sound intensity measurements. Carried out digital signal processing, as well as analysis and interpretation. Programmed systems using various interfaces. N.B. I also completed a degree during this time.
