I was elected to the Decatur City Council in April 2017 and my term runs from May 2017 - April 2021. My priorities for Decatur include reversing population decline, neighborhood revitalization, fostering equitable relationships, protecting natural resources, growing entrepreneurial opportunities, and involving citizens in decision making. I am a strong proponent of a balanced city budget, a strong supporter of allowing adult-use cannabis businesses in the city, and a strong opponent of video gambling. I have been a professor at the college level for over 20 years. During this time, I have published over 20 peer-reviewed articles and coordinated grants totaling over $1,000,000. My research projects focus on wild bird feeding; impact of wind turbines, television towers, and windows on bird populations; and habitat loss and fragmentation impacts to grassland, wetland, and forest bird populations.At Millikin University, I am one of the co-founders of the Institute for Science Entrepreneurship. The institute serves as a training center for students to develop the skills they need to create science ventures, provides opportunities for students to conduct research for external clients, and promotes science entrepreneurship to the larger community through a speaker series.
