About Damien J O'Meara

I am an academic with experience in both teaching and research covering the fields media and communications, screen and media industries, and gender and sexuality. My PhD - submitted within 3.5 years - is currently under examination. ‘Queering Australian Screens: The production culture influences on gender and sexually diverse representations in Australian scripted television, 2011–2021’ uses original television industry interviews, political-economic, textual and content analysis to draw novel insights about how queer stories get onscreen. I expect to receive examiner comments in January 2025.My research is at the intersection of television industry studies and queer screen studies. I also have active research projects underway examining professional communication practice in popular culture industries, digital communities and participatory cultures. I have published in Media International Australia and Senses of Cinema and am adapting my PhD thesis into a scholarly monograph when it is through examination. As I await my PhD examination, I'm exploring my next steps for my academic career in a teaching and research position. In addition to my research, I have experience in teaching, communications, and as professional writer, spanning over a decade. I have taught various units in film and television studies, media studies, gender and race in media, media content creation, advertising, and professional communications practice, as a Sessional Lecturer, Tutor, Convenor, and Lead Unit Coordinator with Swinburne and Monash universities. I have also worked as a Senior Communications Strategist and Speechwriter at the Department of Education and Training Victoria, where I led internal change communications, advertising campaigns, and public engagement programs.
