I joined a team who was new to the RoR stack. They had just acquired an app from a different company and needed to get up to speed quickly so they could release to the APAC region. Their dev counterparts were in the UK on a brutal timezone difference. They really needed someone in their timezone to help guide and mentor the team into their stride. That's where I came in!I initially thought I was coming in to do some senior dev work to get feature complete for release. Quickly I learned that my value to the team was constant feedback, answering questions, and pairing. I was cleaning up tech debt, reviewing PRs and giving feedback, running lunch and learn sessions, and most importantly teaching the rails way of doing development. The more I taught them the tooling and commands, the faster they developed features. I was also able to sit down with other teams and answer their questions on how to build additional tooling to support the business needs. Stack: Ruby on Rails, Postgresql, Ember.js, Heroku

Working on the core systems team involves a _lot_ of different things: authentication services, lead ingestion, a consolidated data API for all university Salesforce organizations, prod/dev/qa/uat environment automation, large scale data sync/replication, etc.The 2U ecosystem is a polyglot of services across many programming languages. The core systems team primarily owns apps written in Python, Elixir, and Javascript. This is my first time working with Elixir in a production environment and I have come to really appreciate and love it.I could talk ad naseum about the problems tackled by this team, so feel free to ask questions if you're interested. Buzzwords of note: GraphQL, Kafka, Elixir, Phoenix, Salesforce API, Streamsets, Mulesoft, Kubernetes

Joining a small, focused team has been a wonderful experience. I worked primarily on a ruby on rails back-end system and API that sync'd with an ERP (Enterprise resource planner) and drove a SPA (Single page application) on the front-end. Besides those primary responsibilities there were several integrations from shipping partners to payment gateways to facilitate the entire experience. Buy some signature jeans from the website, pick up at your front door! If only it were that simple :)I was able to work on a lot of projects across the company. Here's an incomplete list of some of those projects:- Transition from regional shipping to a more precise zip-code based model.- Enable international ordering / shipping / payments- Expand and scale our API- Fix legacy bugs with the communication to our ERP, add monitoring and alerting.- Develop a load testing system to simulate traffic for the holiday "Cyber Weekend" where we got 4-10x traffic- Use the load testing system to identify problem areas within our systems. In some cases turning these into feature flippers so functionality could be disabled in worst-case scenarios. This was a wonderful company and team to work with. I got a lot of diverse experience across multiple disciplines.

Senior Software Engineer

Washington, Dc, Us

I started working at LivingSocial on the Merchant side of the business. We ran the web and native portal for 41K active merchants ranging from small local businesses to national brands like Costco, BJs, and ProFlowers. Jumping right into a new product called Merchant Connect, we gave merchants the ability to customize communications to their buyers and was a very popular feature. In addition I got to work on the SOA apps that Merchant owned and collaborate with other teams to update the apps we didn't. We paired often to add business features, monitoring, analytics, bug fixes, and work closely with Merchant Support Representatives to fix escalated issues. After doing a rotation on the Dev Platform team I was offered a position with them. This was a very exciting change of pace for me. You could call us DevOps if you're comfortable with the term. Our team was very reactive to day-to-day issues as we bridged the gap between developers and sysadmins. Our work centered around internal tooling, deployments systems, staging and local environments, monitoring and alerting systems, and documenting the systems. We were heavily utilized for production debugging, problems with deployments, and answering questions about our infrastructure.I have really enjoyed working at LivingSocial and have been enriched by all the wonderful and talented people I've had the pleasure of working with.
