At the ground floor of an exciting software startup, I was tasked with taking technologies built for military and federal uses and transitioning to the private sector. Partnered with Intelligent Software Solutions, these technologies include business intelligence (BI) capabilities such as data access, fusion, visualization, and report generation as well as technologies for the processing of unstructured data with technologies that include natural language processing (NLP), semantic search, and predictive reasoning. Additionally, I supervised all software development activities of our flexible and reusable enterprise platform that mitigated the total cost of ownership incurred when developing custom business applications.Unfortunately, as with a lot of startups, our investor's funds dried up before we could launch and show the world the good things we were building.

Working in various and often challenging domains throughout DoD, I managed the vision, design, development, testing, accreditation, fielding, and technical support of numerous desktop (Java) and web-based products based on the company’s flagship platform – WebTAS. These products provided both command and warfighter level support for domains such as intelligence analysis, operations, situation awareness, effects-based operations, systems management, personnel management, logistics management, predictive analysis, counter-drug, counter-terrorism, counter-threat finance, and exercise planning and simulation.

Lucky enough to join an amazing team working on a critical system used at the global warfighter level -- Space-based Blue Force Tracking (SB-BFT). My contribution to this system was as the lead developer of a vital component used by the SB-BFT Mission Management Center (MMC) and deployed warfighters to manage the inventory, ownership, and visibility of tracking devices.

Straight out of the military I found myself working for a great company that afforded me the opportunity to be completely immersed in all aspects of the software development life cycle for numerous client-server applications. As a developer, some of the projects that I was a significant contributor on included a facility scheduling system, geospatial web portal leveraging ArcGIS, 3D (DirectX) data visualization and analysis system used to monitor real-time sensor data, and a web-based data brokering service.

While coding fulltime for Nakata’s sister company, Colorado DataScapes, I assumed the role of IT Manager for Nakata, which led to some extremely late nights and long weekends. Some of the highlights during this period included the daily management of over 120 workstations and 5 servers (SQL Server, Oracle, Exchange Server, ArcIMS, and network storage); custom system builds to support GIS developers; transitioning the office from a coax-based token ring LAN (yes, token ring!) to ethernet; fielding of a system and license inventory capability; OS transition from NT4.0/Win98 to Win2K; transition from POP email to Exchange Server; fielding of a Cisco VPN solution; and the complete network infrastructure build-out for 2 remote offices.
