Ai Research Platform Engineer / Senior Data Engineer
2015: Thoroughly analyzed one of our most critical production servers, created a testing framework to safely uplift it, and use it to successfully uplift a simpler server as a test-case. Worked on several big data POCs involving kafka, spark, storm, flink, and voltdb.2016: Successfully uplifted our most critical and high-risk server with 100% success. Was recognized by the CEO level for this achievement. Spent six months of this year as a SQL Server DBA of one of the largest databases in the entire world after a DBA left our team. We also uplifted three additional servers this year. I began focusing on learning data science this year.2017: With several contractors, we uplifted twelve more high-risk servers with 100% success. The testing framework has performed very well even to this day (2019). I was given a promotion this year, and I also began focusing on learning machine learning.2018: Used complex network analysis (graph) to fully map out the dataflow between several of our critical production servers. I also competed in our own Analytic Center of Excellence's (ACE) machine learning competition and placed second with a ransomware classifier that could predict on a test/validation set at 99.7% accuracy. This won me recognition to the CTO level.2019: The analysis from 2018 set the stage for consolidation work and for cloud strategy. I have been doing a lot of spark development (AWS), datacenter migration work, and won first place in the ACE ML competition.
Senior Security And Database Administrator
• Was lead architect of a major IT systems overhaul. This included upgrading most of the security architecture, purchasing and configuring a SAN, setting up physical servers and multiple virtual instances of Windows Server 2012, set up high availability failover clusters on all servers, and managed a small IT team. • Stood up the company’s SQL Server instance (2012) using a physical-physical server architecture for high performance with high availability failover clustering.• Carried out performance tuning, backup and recovery, patch management, after-hour maintenance and updates, configuration management, database creation, and every aspect of SQL Server database administration required by the company. • Trained staff analysts and data entry workers to be capable database developers by giving training in T-SQL development and database fundamentals.• Created 100+ SSIS/ETL packages in the process of migrating 6000+ Microsoft Access databases and flat files into one single, centralized SQL Server 2012 instance. Also created several dozen stored procedures, queries, and user-defined functions to support the transition and provide new automation, improved performance, better data oversight, automated reporting, and other forms of automation.• Using SSIS/ETL, I invented a very fast and efficient data layer for software consumption that was geared for much larger data (4TB) for better processing power and data insight. This required a lot of SQL Server performance tuning and SQL development.Highlight: Greenfield Advisors had a problematic data/server architecture. I was hired to improve this. I designed and implemented a much improved architecture to meet their needs and strengthen their defensive stance. Prior to my arrival, all database development was done in Microsoft Access. I migrated the company to SQL Server 2012 and was able to help create several new products to make the company more productive and competitive.
Microsoft Sql Server Dba
• Researched, developed, and implemented performance tuning measures to reduce the amount of locking that was taking place in SQL Server 2008 OLTP databases. Found problems with cached execution plans, resource starved servers, and poor application design practices. Also administrated OLAP databases, but they were having far fewer locking issues.• Created dozens of SQL queries and stored procedures to support SQL Server performance tuning.• Tested various methods of database configuration to find the best method for boosting the performance of the SQL Server database. Settled on methods that had a direct improvement on concurrency and IO. • Document research and development process to enhance collaboration.• Work in-office and remotely “on-call” to provide 24/7 support to the organization, as needed.• Worked on the High Availability / Disaster Recovery team to ensure minimal downtime in the event of a disaster and to ensure that our data would be available and quickly up and running in the event of a disaster.Highlight: Varolii was facing frequent database and application outages due to extended locking. The root cause of this was poor execution plan caching and resource starved servers. Using DMOs and performance monitoring, my team and I were able to isolate the problem and recommend solutions to cause the extending locking to largely go away. Solving the problem involved not only technical troubleshooting and correction but also working with several independent units of the company to encourage cooperation.
Oracle Database Administrator / Developer
• Database administrator for an Oracle electronic health care database. Also created SQL reports for providers and other hospital support staff.• Created close to a hundred SQL queries and views to provide split-second database reporting to doctors and other hospital care providers. Created and maintained a reports portal using .NET/C# technologies and Microsoft SharePoint.• Encouraged and offered training on secure data practices to protect patient personally identifiable information (PII).Highlight: The report portal I developed was comprised of close to a hundred SQL reports that were created using SQL and programming (C#) skills that go beyond those required by the DBA position, but they provided much-needed usability for the reports allowing doctors and medical staff up-to-the-second data access from reporting. The portal allowed me to provide SQL reporting automation with self-service reports for those in need. This automation allowed me to create many reports with no additional overhead to me as a developer.
Web Developer
• Designed, developed, and administrated Microsoft SQL Server 2005/2008 databases to support web application development. • Developed database security best practices for use by the application development team to better protect Personally Identifiable Information (PII). Protected applications and servers against common attacks such as SQL Injection and cross-site scripting. • Using dynamic-salt-hashing, invented a powerful new way to protect passwords at the row level rather than the table level. This protects all passwords in a table far beyond typical salt-hashing methods rendering them nearly unbreakable in the event of a data breach.• Created a few SSIS packages as needed for migrating data between databases and importing from other files. Created dozens of stored procedures and queries for use by my own web applications. Implemented indexes where they would be helpful for performance boosts. Created backup and restore processes for my own databases.• Added SQL Server indexes as needed for performance, and created triggers to simplify application development and enforce data integrity.Highlight: MCCS was in the process of migrating from ASP to ASP.NET when they hired me, and they needed someone with a lot of database, web application development, and security education and experience to see what could be done using newer tools. I was able to create some of the most exciting web applications the company had dreamed up, as well as greatly improving the web development team’s security data database practices.
Web Developer
• Designed, developed, and maintained MySQL databases to support web application development. Database creation, design, indexing, backup, and recovery were all a major part of this role.• Implemented safeguards to protect web applications against common common web attacks such as SQL injection and cross-site scripting. Carried out SQL injection penetration tests against my own web applications to ensure they were properly defended.• Created many web applications for this company including their first database driven website, first e-commerce website, and first personals website, which had a very positive impact on the business. Architect of all of the software and database development, and administrated databases and applications once they were built and running in productions.
Lead Programmer
• Designed, developed, and maintained MySQL and PostgreSQL databases to support web application development. Database creation, design, indexing, backup, and recovery were all a major part of this role.• Implemented safeguards to protect web applications against common common web attacks such as SQL injection and cross-site scripting. Carried out SQL injection penetration tests against my own web applications to ensure they were properly defended.• Developed dozens of databases and web applications while at this job for internal use and for external clients. Created thousands of lines of PHP and SQL code.• Carried out project management while working with all units of the company to carry out software, database, and server configuration and development.
