At the Institute of Marine Affairs, I was responsible for all aspects of accounting from transaction recording, through reporting on several bases to financial planning. I also helped our scientists and other professionals with issues of Budget management, organisation systems and procedures, government liason and advocacy.I have been in the accounting field since 1986 starting at the local firm of what is now KPMG. At KPMG I conducted audits of companies of various sizes and in several industries, from small mico-enterprise funds to large petroleum corporations. I learned to appreciate the full story of what financials say, and the issues within various industries. I also helped with devising and promoting financial plans for expanding companies and addressing and advising on taxation issues.After nine years of at KPMG I moved to a small hotel as the Manager, Finance and Administration. At the hotel I learned managing on tight budgets and customer awareness. I helped put together a business plan that pointed the way to improved commercial success. I moved from the hotel to InterServ Ltd. which is a small ISP that pioneered the way Internet services are provided. At InterServ I learned the struggles of a small start-up company as it matches ambitious ideas with a competitor that was its main service provider (the local telecom). After being wooed by several interested companies, InterServ was sold to an Information Technology based group of companies and I was let go. I returned to Public Accounting after InterServ to re-examine my goals and decided that I should try independent advisory services for small entities to help them in their financial activities and prospects.
