Beginnings: I grew up on a farm in central Pennsylvania. It was a really fun place to spend my childhood, my parents really encouraged us to explore, discover and create. My brothers & I spent a lot of time building tree forts, hay tunnels, bike jumps into the pond and then later in our teens high ropes courses with ziplines. Education: I attended Columbia University, primarily because it was in New York and I wanted to try someplace different. The city and the college were great places to grow and experience the newest and strangest that the country has to offer. Columbia’s education emphasized breadth, and all the things that go along with that. Beyond just gaining a thorough understanding of the way the world works, I think my time at Columbia greatly improved my ability to write and communicate effectively, and probably more than anything else put me on course to be a lifetime researcher giving me the limitless ability to learn anything new.Work Pre-Professional: My work before and during college was a bit colorful. I worked ovens in a bun factory, as a line operator in a PVC pipe factory, was a doorman on Fifth Avenue, and was a teacher at a summer enrichment program.Consulting & Finance After college, I briefly worked in finance and then spent several years working in consulting. Entrepreneurship:During a two-year period in the middle of my consulting career I left and founded a company in the consumer Internet space. I gained useful experience in product design, as well as all the ins and outs of running a small business. After mixed success and a diminishing bank account we closed up shop and I headed back to the consulting world.Coding & Web Development: At some point, I decided that I would like to learn how to code. I started with JavaScript and then learned all the necessary complementary pieces so that I could build websites. I love coding. It's the perfect mix of creativity and problem solving.
