Driven by policy and market forces, the electric power system in the U.S. is undergoing many large scale changes. Renewable Portfolio Standards are encouraging the deployment of large amounts of wind energy, and performance standards are encouraging reductions in emissions of air pollutants from fossil generators. I use optimization and statistical tools, as well as economic valuation techniques, to assess policies designed to reduce the environmental impact of electric power in a cost effective way. My research focuses on two key questions: "How will high levels of variable renewable energies affect the operation of fossil fueled generators?" and "How should power plants equipped with Carbon Capture and Storage be optimally operated in systems with high levels of wind penetration?"
