I was responsible for the development of new customer projects and network management functions relating to MCI’s store and forward messaging system. I also acted as technical TCP/IP adviser for client meetings with Merrill Lynch, Chase Manhattan Bank, and AOL.Senior System Engineer - August 1992 - November 1994 (2 years four months)Hired to develop a TCP/IP interface for MCI’s store and forward messaging system. In the process, I spearheaded a re-engineering of the companies DOS based TSR messaging system to a real-time UNIX environment. Lead a software development team that designed and developed a standard messaging operating system used by all protocols. The final configurations were customer and/or protocol specific, each running on a Sun Solaris box, networked to a store and forward VAX farm. The new platform provided savings in hardware and software development costs along with a reduced data center footprint, due to its ability to handle multiple sessions. Supported protocols were: LU6.2, DEC-NET, X.25, X.400, XMODEM, TCP/IP and FAX.

Software EngineerCognitronics Corporation Sep 1989 - Aug 1992Design and development of a real-time voice response system using pSOS as the kernel. The system, built on a 68000 VME board communicated with multiple processes running on a Solaris UNIX system. The functional components of the system communicated via shared memory, a disk manager over the VME bus using pSOS, and line cards via a SCSI bus connected to the 68000 board. The system performed real-time play and record functions for voice and data (If I only knew we were building mp3 players). I was responsible for designing and developing call processing features, the heart of the system that coordinated and controlled all activity. I spearheaded the development and adoption of a real-time debugging API, which facilitated the growth of the voice response system. The debugging API and its logging system became an essential tool for system installers and all future development. -

Apr 1987 - Aug 1989Managed relationships, system enhancements and support issues for RCA Global, Austria’s Data Communication Center and others. Worked with stakeholders at all levels from senior management, department managers, data center supervisors, union telecommunications workers and software/hardware engineers.Software Engineer - July 1983 to March 1987Start-up company that manufactured data communications equipment for TELEX and packet switched central offices. Their key customer was RCA Global, soon to be acquired by MCI International. The company built its switching systems from the ground up using proprietary Intel-based hardware and developed all software in-house using Intel assembler and C. For a software engineer; this was heaven, the perfect environment to discover and learn about the future that had not yet arrived (the IBM PC was only two years old). The hands-on atmosphere at this company provided me with a solid foundation and understanding of user interfaces, communication protocols, real-time systems, programming languages, software development, system integration, debugging, working with others as a team and much, much more. It was the good old days…
