Profile bio

About David L. Sherer

I apply ecology and environmental policy to conserve threatened and endangered species. My background includes post-graduate research experience studying birds, including imperiled species, in both federal government and non-profit roles, where I developed innovative and technologically-driven solutions to collect, manage, analyze, and interpret ecological and geospatial data in the context of long-term population demography studies. I hold a BS in Wildlife and Fisheries Science and a MS in Biology, with a thesis in the ecology and behavior of Florida Scrub-Jays. I am certified as an Associate Wildlife Biologist® by The Wildlife Society. My work at conservation science NGOs in California and Florida developed my practical skills in field research. I gained additional proficiency in experimental design, quantitative ecology and independent research as a graduate student. Cumulative coursework, teaching, and professional research experiences provided me with a comprehensive education in both theoretical and applied ecology, plus a detailed functional knowledge of GIS and statistical software applications that I honed as an independent researcher. This early-career development culminated with my selection as a Directorate Fellow with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS), where I applied my skills to develop novel data entry and management interfaces for biologists at the Attwater Prairie Chicken National Wildlife Refuge.I subsequently joined the USFWS as a Fish and Wildlife Biologist at the Ventura, California field office, where I managed BeachCOMBERS (a long-term citizen science program to track rates of marine animal carcass deposition on beaches), coordinated the recovery of listed bird species in Central and Southern California, and led interagency consultations with other federal agencies pursuant to section 7 of the Endangered Species Act.In 2022 I joined the USFWS Pacific Southwest Regional Office as a Senior Fish and Wildlife Biologist coordinating section 7 consultations for transportation and broadband internet infrastructure projects throughout California. I am a regional Employee Ambassador and an active mentor of students at all levels.*This is a personal social media account and contains my personal opinions and views.
